Un regard sur la production artistique en Espagne à l’aube du XXe siècle Le catalogue qui accompagne l’exposition de la Fondation de l’Hermitage «El Modernismo. De Sorolla à Picasso, 1880-1918», offre une vision globale de l’art espagnol à l’aube du XXe siècle. Centrée sur des peintres de la «génération de 1898» issue des turbulences extrêmes traversées par l’Espagne tout au long du XIXe siècle, l’exposition montre l’évolution que connaissent ces artistes. Oscillant entre respect des traditions hispaniques et modernité, leurs œuvres s’inscrivent dans l’élan d’ouverture que connaît alors l’avant-garde espagnole. Extraordinairement riche et diverse, la production artistique en Espagne à l’aube du XXe siècle reste encore mal connue en dehors de son pays d’origine. Entre la mort de Goya et la période cubiste de Picasso s’étendent pourtant quelques décennies fascinantes, qui voient se former les prémices de l’art moderne hispanique. Grâce à cette exposition, la Fondation de l’Hermitage propose à ses visiteurs la découverte d’une partie des trésors cachés de l’Espagne, dont beaucoup sont présentés pour la première fois en Suisse. Le catalogue accompagnant l’exposition contient des textes de William Hauptman, commissaire de l’exposition, Blanca Pons-Sorolla (arrière-petite-fille du peintre Joachin Sorolla) et Javier Baron (conservateur au Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid). Kokoschka et la musique

La liaison entre la peinture et la musique dans l’œuvre de Oscar Kokoschka Pendant toute sa vie Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) a fréquenté les musiciens les plus célèbres de son époque tels que les compositeurs Arnold Schönberg et Alban Berg, le chef-d’orchestre Wilhelm Furtwängler ou le violoncelliste catalan Pablo Casals dont il a fait de nombreux portraits. La Bibliothèque Centrale de Zurich conserve d’innombrables échanges de lettres entre Kokoschka et ses amis musiciens dont les extraits les plus importants se trouvent pour la première fois publiés dans cet ouvrage. Pour ses amis, l’artiste a conçu d’incroyables décors et costumes pour de célèbres opéras présentés également dans cet ouvrage grâce au concours de la fondation Kokoschka. On retrouve, par exemple, les décors réalisés pour la Flûte enchantée présentée en 1955 à Salzbourg et en 1965 au Grand Théâtre de Genève, une suite de pastels qui sont des projets pour les décors du Bal masqué de Verdi réalisés pour le célèbre festival Maggio Musicale Fiorentino de 1963 et un carnet de croquis pour une mise en scène de Fidelio de Beethoven. Ses textes ont aussi inspiré différents opéras et chants. Son amour malheureux avec Alma Gustav Mahler, par exemple, est à l’origine de sa pièce de théâtre Orphée et Eurydice qui fut mise en musique par le compositeur autrichien Ernst Krenek. Sa peinture, évidemment, est le reflet de ce contexte bouillonnant. Ornament and the Grotesque - Fantastical Decoration from Antiquity to Art Nouveau

The discovery of Nero's Domus Aurea in Rome at the end of the 15th century revealed an unfamiliar, playful style of classical ornament that captured the imagination of Renaissance artists. For the first explorers it was like entering a series of caves or 'grottoes', which is why they called the style of the painting on the walls and ceilings 'grotesque'. The first book to reveal this vast treasury, Ornament and the Grotesque brings the story up to the late 19th century and shows how it led eventually to Art Nouveau. Far removed from the formal language of traditional classical ornament, what they saw was something essentially decorative and only semi-serious: parodies of classical mythology, fantastic hybrid monsters, men hatching out of eggs, images of perverse eroticism, impossible architectural visions, giant butterflies, mischievous putti, monkeys, sphinxes and nightmare insects - a repertoire of uninhibited imagination where nothing was taboo. Inspired by this discovery, Italian artists, including Perugino, Signorelli and Mantegna, immediately started to copy the style.
