NameHenry van de Velde – Interiors
DescriptionAs an Art Nouveau architect and designer Henry van de Velde achieved world renown. From the end of the 19th century this Fleming strove to “liberate the world from its ugliness” and to improve human life by means of a new aesthetic. With his work, which is permeated by the design strength of the curving line, he became a significant figure in terms of paving the way for modernism. The exhibition shows important objects from his interiors and uses photographs and drawings to enable visitors to experience his interior designs for houses, shops and galleries. Objects of daily use represent perfect elegance: with silver cutlery visitors can experience the bourgeois culture of dining or, in spirit, can seat themselves at a writing desk, surrounded by opulently coloured fabrics and wallpapers, with an ivory letter-opener in the hand.
