Name
Gustav Klimt – The Musical
Description
To mark Klimt’s 150th birthday, "Gustav Klimt – The Musical" can be seen from 1 September to 7 October 2012 in Vienna’s Künstlerhaus. The musical follows the biography of Gustav Klimt from his younger days to his death: in 1881, he founded the "Artists' Company" with his brother Ernst and painting colleague Franz Matsch. Yet Klimt's "genius" (the embodiment of his creative power, represented by a slim beauty in ornamental costume) soon begins to take increasing possession of him. It spurs him on to free himself from the pure depiction of historical motifs and themes. With success: Klimt beats a new path. And in doing so comes up against resistance amongst groups of conservative artists and state leaders. Of course, Klimt's private life is also a theme in the musical: his relationship with Emilie Flöge and his illegitimate child with his model Mizzi Zimmermann. In the second act, which begins with the opening of the Secession in 1898, the dispute surrounding Klimt's ceiling paintings is taken as a theme. By contrast, he celebrated great triumphs abroad. The exceptional artist increasingly immersed himself in his art, isolated himself - driven by the "genius" - from his surroundings, in order to concentrate solely on his work. He even almost breaks with Emilie Flöge. The two of them are only truly united again in death: Gustav Klimt died in her arms in 1918. The music is by Gerald Gratzer, the book by Niki Neuspiel. The musical is performed from Thursday to Monday in German and every Wednesday in English. There are no performances on Tuesdays.
