AbstractThe Glasgow architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh died in 1928. Five years later in 1933, and only on the death of his wife Margaret Macdonald, a small memorial exhibition was staged to honour his life and work. Remarkably it was to be a further 35 years, in 1968, before another, more substantial exhibition was arranged to profile his artistic creativity. However, since the 1980s interest in both Mackintosh and Glasgow’s cultural heritage has reached an unprecedented level amongst academics and the general public alike. Today, Mackintosh’s name and reputation is known the world over.
This presentation looks at some of the factors that have projected Mackintosh’s work to a growing international audience.
