New permanent collection at the MMCAT in Barcelona

On the event of its third anniversary, the Museu del Modernisme Català is inaugurating its new permanent collection on 14 March. In its resolve to continue promoting and disseminating Catalan Modernisme, the museum has added almost thirty new works by the most significant artists in our cultural legacy.

Among the recent additions, highlights include two drawings in charcoal and pastel by Ramon Casas, one of which is a portrait of his model, lover and wife Júlia Peraire, in which the fashion tastes of the early twentieth century predominate. Also exhibited is the escritoire from the long-gone Casa Trinxet, a building designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch (located at Còrsega, 268, on Balmes corner, next to the railway line linking Barcelona and Sarrià). Its Solomonic-styled legs are striking, matching as they do the same style of columns in the house’s entrance hall and sitting room.

One of Gaspar Homar’s remarkable pieces is the spectacular, large umbrella stand with magnificently worked marquetry that decorates most of this piece of entrance hall furniture. Another skilled cabinetmaker and decorator, Joan Busquets, is the creator of a settle bench of exquisite refinement, which furnished the study of the famous photographer Pau Audouard, occupying the ground floor of Casa Lleó Morera in Passeig de Gràcia (today the Loewe store).

Another notable piece of artwork is the poster for the 3a Exposició internacional de Belles Arts de 1896 (3rd International Fine Arts Exhibition, 1896) by Alexandre de Riquer. It is of large dimensions and considered to be the first Modernista poster. Closing this selection of works is the delicate set of silver cups from the workshop of the Masriera brothers, the result of exact and meticulous silversmithing.

Video The Sagrada Família, as you’ve never seen it from Barcelona

A spectacular video of the Sagrada Família has just been published on the Internet, showing previously unseen images of this basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí. The video was recorded with the aid of a new model of drone or microcopter – a tiny, unmanned helicopter with eight rotor blades – to which a camera was fitted to film the church from unprecedented viewpoints. Using a system of three axes to control movement, the camera can also record images using the time-lapse technique, showing in mere seconds how light in the temple changes throughout the day.

The images in this video were taken in April 2012 by Albert Castaño and Luis Caldevilla.

A new publication about Emile Gallé’s work recommended by Nancy

In 2006 disappeared the director of the Hetjens Museum of Düsseldorf, Bernd Hakenjos, internationally reputed Art historian specialist of the ceramics. His friends Sigrid Barten (Curator of the Bellerive Museum of Zürich) and Hans Harder decided then to pay tribute by publishing its Ph. D., defended in 1973 and dedicated to Emile Gallé’s work.
This scrupulous and original work is published today in two volumes richly illustrated in German at Hirmer Publisher (Germany), thanks to the support of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation of Cologne.
Taking an inventory of ceramics, glassworks and furniture pieces, Bernd Hakenjos undertook the first large-bodied monographic study about the artist of Nancy. His knowledge and the quality of his researches justify the interest of the publication, fourty years afterwards, of a reference work. A French version should follow…
