Creative Mackintosh Festival in Glasgow - from 15 to 28 October 2012 


Barcelona has Gaudi, Chicago has Frank Lloyd Wright and Glasgow has the unique legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh, one of The Glasgow Four, helped to take art and architecture into the modern era and was a crucial figure in the explosion of creativity that characterises Art Nouveau in the early part of the 20th century.
Over the space of two weeks we invite you to join the celebration of this exciting heritage.
The Festival crosses genres, from theatre and music to design and comedy.

Exhibition Alles Reklame! (It’s All Advertising!) at Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt - from 7 October 2012 to 6 January 2013


Poster Art of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony

At the beginning of the 20th century, posters were regarded as the “fine art of the street”. They were collected by museums and private collections and featured in exhibitions and various publications. In their quest to aesthetically transform all aspects of modern life, many members of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony (1899-1914) set out to communicate their artistic ideas in the public sphere. In the process, they created iconic poster masterpieces that immediately became part of the total artwork Mathildenhöhe.
Alles Reklame! (It’s All Advertising!) is the very first exhibition dedicated solely to this group of artworks. The most important posters of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony will be on view by artists such as Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen, Johann Vincenz Cissarz, Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens and Bernhard Hoetger. In total, over 60 posters, watercolors, drawings, and postcards will be shown that were created on the Mathildenhöhe between 1899 and 1914. Important posters from the art nouveau capitals Paris, Munich, and Vienna round off the selection.
In the exhibition, the compositions and motifs of the posters, ranging from art nouveau to expressionism, will be decoded and presented in a multitude of variations and studies. For the first time ever, the economic relevance of the posters for the exhibitions on the Mathildenhöhe will be illuminated alongside other new findings contributing to the research on poster art around 1900.

Wineries. Modernisme + Cooperative movement at CaixaForum, Barcelona - from 6 July to 14 October 2012 


This exhibition aims to offer certain keys to understanding the artistic value and architectural singularity of these cellars, also known as Art Nouveau cellars or Cathedrals of wine. It shows various ways of looking at these buildings and approaching them, taking as its central thread the architects (especially Cèsar Martinell, who designed over half of them) and the people who lived them and who still live them: the farmers who mortgaged themselves to push forward a collective project and today's Cooperative members who maintain the commitment and pride that made these architectural giants possible.

Exhibition Other Pedreres at La Pedrera in Barcelona - from 29 October 2012 to 24 February 2013


To celebrate the centenary of finishing works on Casa Milà, 1906-1912, popularly known as La Pedrera (The Quarry), which was the project of the architect Antonio Gaudi i Cornet, Fundacio CatalunyaCaixa is presenting « Other Pedreres ».
This show looks at buildings erected in the same period as La Pedrera, which were also icons representing the best architecture worldwide. The exhibition aims to show the diverse trends in architectural and furnishing styles, as well as in the decorative and applied arts.
Focussing primarily on Western Europe, in a tour of the most emblematic buildings by creators as significant and innovative as Victor Horta, Hector Guimard, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Joseph Hoffmann and Adolf Loos, it then leaps on the United States to present Frank Lloyd Wright’s work.

Exhibition Male Nudes at the Leopold Museum in Vienna - from 19 October 2012 to 4 March 2013


Power and Powerlessness through the Ages

The endless flood of images intrinsic to today’s lifestyle has given unprecedented public prominence to the depiction of male nudes. At the same time seemingly firmly established categories such as »masculinity«, »body« and »nakedness« are apparently being redefined on a broad social basis, resulting in a new interpretation of male gender roles. These developments have prompted the Leopold Museum to embark on a topical as well as historical journey through the visual arts in search of the male nude, a quest leading predominantly from the longing for antiquity prevalent in art around 1800 to contemporary art.
This exhibition contains some work of Egon Schiele.

Art Nouveau Posters at Bathhouse 4, Sprudelhof in Bad Nauheim - from 1st to 23 September 2012


Jugendstilverein Bad Nauheim presents an exhibition "Plakatkunst des Jugendstils" - Art Nouveau Posters - from September 1st - 30, 2012 in bathhouse 4 of Sprudelhof in Bad Nauheim.

Jugendstilverein has chosen posters which had been designed by famous artists of the Belle Epoque era and which were mainly created to announce exhibitions of art. The presentation is completed by banners with detailed explanations.

It is a selection from the very beginning of printed posters in England until the Vienna Secession, i.e. 1893 - 1914. The images have been made available for reproduction by our partner cities of Réseau Art Nouveau Network; Jugendstilverein thanks them a lot to all.

Without Klimt, Gustav Klimt and the Künstlerhaus at the Künstlerhaus - from 6 July to 2 September 2012 


The "Gustav Klimt and the Künstlerhaus" exhibition uses documents, letters and photographs from the Künstlerhaus archive to explain many of the artistic and biographical milestones in the work of Gustav Klimt. 

Gustav Klimt was a highly active member of the Künstlerhaus - one of the most influential artists' associations in Central Europe - from 1891-1897. Through his membership of the Künstlerhaus, Klimt came into contact with numerous influential figures and was appointed to various committees for public contracts, such as the one overseeing the interior design and decoration of the City Hall. It was at the Künstlerhaus that Gustav Klimt made the acquain­tance of Nikolaus Dumba, a major patron of the Ringstrasse, for whom he completed a number of commissions. He also participated in numerous annual exhibitions. In 1890 Klimt experienced his first major success when his picture "Inside the Old Court Theater" was awarded the Emporer's extremely generous inaugural prize. In 1897 Klimt left the association with 18 of his contemporaries in protest at the academic dogma being preached by the Künstlerhaus. Exhibitions continued to be dedicated to Klimt after his death - in 1943 a major Gustav Klimt show, which drew in excess of 24,000 visitors, was held at the Secession to mark the 25th anniversary of his death and his 80th birthday. Klimt's art took pride of place at the 1985 exhibition "Dream and Reality", hosted by the Wien Museum at the Künstlerhaus. An interesting and little-known fact is that Klimt's illegitimate son, the film director Gustav Ucicky (1899-1961), was also a member of the Künstlerhaus artists' association.

Exhibition The Emilie Flöge Fabric Sample Collection at the OMV in Vienna 


From 25 May to 2 December 2012 

Dazzling embroideries, delicate laces, fine braids, fabrics with Art Nouveau ornamentation – the majority of the pieces in the extensive collection of textiles assembled by fashion designer – and Gustav Klimt’s muse and partner – Emilie Flöge (1874–1952) come from Southeastern Europe.

The Austrian Folklore Museum was able to acquire 350 of these objects in 1998 from the Flöge estate. These will go on show to the public for the first time from May to October 2012 and will be presented against the backdrop of the discovery and invention of folk art around 1900. Comparative non-textile exhibits will help to present the fabrics in their wider historical context. The urban bourgeoisie took a very strong interest in rural handicrafts at the end of the 19th century. Only as people began to collect examples of this decorative, yet primitive and traditional art, did its artistic and aesthetic merits come to be appreciated, and ultimately influence the stylistic development of Austrian art nouveau.
Klimt's famous portrait of Emilie Flöge - completed in 1902 - is on show at the Wien Museum. In 1904 Flöge and her sister Helene opened the Schwestern Flöge haute couture salon on Vienna's Mariahilfer Strasse. Here they presented designer clothes based on the fashions of the Wiener Werkstätte. The interior of the salon was designed in the art Nouveau style by Josef Hoffmann. Helen and Emilie Flöge were famous for their "rational dresses" for which Klimt also supplied designs. These dresses could be worn without a corset, hung loosely from the shoulders, and had broad sleeves. Up to 80 seamstresses were employed at the Flöge sisters' salon. It was forced to close in 1938 and production was transferred to their home in the third district.

Exhibition Face to Face with Gustav Klimt, the Klimt-Bridge in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna - until 6 January 2013


Because of its sensational success, the Klimt-Bridge erected in the Main Staircase of the Kunsthistorisches Museum will remain until January 6, 2013, offering visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy a close-up view of Klimt’s early paintings displayed in situ twelve metres above the floor.

In 1890/91 the twenty-eight-year-old Gustav Klimt executed a number of paintings to decorate the spaces between the columns and above the arcades along the north wall of the KHM’s main staircase. The committee in charge of the newly-built Imperial Museum of Fine Arts (today the Kunsthistorisches Museum) had commissioned a series of forty paintings from a group of young artists called the Company of Artists – Gustav Klimt, his younger brother Ernst, and Franz Matsch – featuring different periods of art from Ancient Egypt to the 18th century. Personifications – either male and female, or female only – symbolize different stylistic periods, regions or centers of art. Pose, costume and selected objects perfectly reflect style and artifacts typical of each period. Gustav Klimt contributed a total of thirteen paintings. All were executed in oil on canvas in the Company of Artists’ communal studio; in 1891, six months before the formal opening of the museum, they were glued to the wall of the main staircase.

Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palace at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art  


From 21 March to 15 July 2012

The Austrian Museum of Applied Art / Contemporary Art (MAK) is dedicating a special exhibit to Gustav Klimt's design drawings for the mosaic in the dining hall of Stoclet Palace.

The entire Stoclet Palace in Brussels is considered a work of Art Nouveau and was designed largely by Josef Hoffmann and Gustav Klimt. Klimt's nine design drawings for the mosaic with the familiar themes of "Expectation", "Fulfillment" and the "Tree of Life" were created in 1910/11. After several years of restoration work, they are now on display at the MAK. Gustav Klimt had a rough concept for how the frieze should look in detail when he began his work. Changes to his design drawings in 1:1 scale gradually gave form to the famous work of art we know today. With numerous instructions, he presented the Vienna Workshop and the Vienna Mosaic Workshop with his precise vision of the frieze.

The exhibit "Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palace" attempts to reproduce Klimt's style of work. Documents authored by Klimt while he was working on the piece or that he wrote about it are placed into context with the final work and what can be seen in the frieze designs. As an accompaniment to the documentation of the newest research results and the restoration, the Stoclet family is profiled as a customer of the Vienna Workshops.

Klimt. The Wien Museum Collection at the Wien Museum - from 16 May to 7 October 2012


The Wien Museum owns an exceptional Klimt collection, which will go on public display in its entirety for the first time in an exhibition entitled "Klimt. ­The Wien Museum Collection".

With around 400 drawings, the Wien Museum has the world's largest collection of Klimt sketches, including preparatory sketches for his best-known masterpieces, as well as studies from all phases of his lifetime work. All the drawings on display are arranged by subject matter (e.g. Secession, studies for the faculty paintings, erotic sketches), giving visitors the possibility to explore all aspects of each theme.
A number of paintings will be on show alongside the sketches, including the most important work of art in the Wien Museum, the "Portrait of Emilie Flöge", which was completed in 1902. The work is one of Klimt's most famous paintings and the first portrait of a female subject to feature ornamental detailing in the foreground. This heralded the dawn of a new creative period in the artist's life.
A number of the pictures completed during this time have sold for record prices at international auctions in recent years. Other exhibits include various posters and printed materials that Klimt designed for the Secession (in many cases the collection has both the originals and the prints), the artist's gown, his death mask, original prints of portrait photographs, busts and a cast of his right hand. Another highlight is Egon Schiele's drawing of the deceased Gustav Klimt.
