International Symposium in Brussels : Brussels as the convergence of arts (1880-1914) - from 24 to 26 November 2011

Multiple relationships that develop between art, music and literature is one of the main features of modernity across Europe in the late nineteenth century. The symbolism is, in this regard, the movement whose representatives in all disciplines, have shown the most enthusiasm to cross the arts. Social transformations of Belgium and the economic success of enlightened bourgeoisie allowed Brussels to establish itself as one of the most dynamic European capitals that will, in this process, around 1900, link symbolism and Art Nouveau. It is in this context that this conference has been created. Brussels as the convergence of arts (1880-1914) gathers specialists of litterature, music and art of the end of the 19th century. Researchers, PhD students, teachers are invited to present their research in an interdisciplinary perspective that crosses the methods and approaches for deepening the knowledge of the artistic culture which built Brussels as a Capital of Art Nouveau.

Emilio Ambrosini : architectural achievements 1884-1912

Museum of the City Rijeka
From 15 September to 20 October 2011

Suur-Merijoki Manor as a total work of art

The Hvitträsk Museum, Luoma
From 8 April to 22 December 2011

Exhibition presents Suur-Merijoki manor, that was built 1901-1904 in the Rural Commune of Viipuri on the Karelian Isthmus, which at the time of construction belonged to the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland in the Russian Empire.

Designed by the architects Herman Gesellius (1874-1916), Armas Lindgren (1874-1929) and  Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950), the main building of Suur-Merijoki Manor is the best-known and most complete total work of art in the history of Finnish architecture.

The collaboration of these Finnish architects still at the beginning of their careers with their client, the businessman Maximilian Othmar Neuscheller of St. Petersburg, was an opportunity for realizing even their wildest plans. Suur-Merijoki Manor was intended for the leisure use of a family with seven children.

On display are beautiful original furniture and sculptures from Suur-Merijoki manor. Manor and its' planning is presented by colorful  watercolor washes by Gesellius, Lindgren and Saarinen. Maximilian Othmar Neuscheller himself photographed his leisure house and on display are also color photographs taken by Neuscheller during 1910's.

With nature as benchmark he takes stone, glass and metal to form a biomorphous architecture sprouting from the way people are and live.
the Art of Shopping reflects the times when Emile Zola wrote his novel Au bonheur des Dames in 1883 and focuses on shopping in stores and warehouses designed by Horta and the atmosphere of shopping at the turn of the century in 1900 in Brussels and Europe.

Gustav Klimt / Josef Hoffmann - Pionners of Modernism at the Belvedere, Vienna - 25 October 2011 to 4 March 2012

The Belvedere owns the world’s largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt. In autumn 2011, it will present this world-famous artist together with the congenial architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Their intense collaboration, such in the Beethoven Exhibition at the Vienna Secession (1902) and the Stoclet Palace in Brussels (1905-12), set new standards in Europe when it comes to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Numerous works, such as Klimt’s Portrait of Fritza Riedler, which clearly reflects Hoffmann’s characteristic hand, attest to the two pioneers’ mutual influence, which in this comprehensive exhibition is also explored with regard to their involvement in the Wiener Werkstätte.

Biennial Art Nouveau 2011 in Brussels - 8 to 30 October 2011

In 2011, the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Biennial Event will once again open the doors of magnificent Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings in Brussels...
This year, we have the pleasure of celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Victor Horta, one of the most famous Brussels architects.
Horta was an exceptional architect, a leader of the Art Nouveau movement, who not only created a style of architecture which completely changed the distribution of interior spaces while using the highest-quality materials and finishes, but also used his great talent to create different sorts of buildings: private houses,a school and a department store. You will be able to enjoy discovering most of Horta's remaining buildings in Brussels during the Biennial art Nouveau Event, including the Tassel House, the Solvay House, the Max Hallet House, the Autrique House, the Frison House, Horta's own house, offices and workshops, the Vinck House, the Winssinger House, the Van Eetvelde House, the Primary School in the Rue Saint Ghislain and the former Wolfers jewellery shop. These buildings are some of the 66 Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings that are not usually open to the public that will be opening to the public during the weekends of the Biennial Art Nouveau Event. In addition to the programme of guided tours of the interiors of these buildings, there will also be 4 special showings of films at the Cinematek (the Brussels Film Museum), a conference on Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and you can choose your favourites from the wide range of guided tours organised by the member associations of Voir et Dire Bruxelles!
Enjoy your tours and (re)-discoveries!
