Exhibition Artist house – Master house – Master building at Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt – from 30 June to 20 October 2019

ARTIST HOUSE - MASTER HOUSE - MASTER BUILDING

As part of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the Institut Mathildenhöhe is presenting an exhibition at the Museum Künstlerkolonie in the summer of 2019, in which the significance of Mathildenhöhe for the development of the Bauhaus and post-war architecture is illustrated. Especially the comprehensive exhibition of the artists’ colony Darmstadt on the Mathildenhöhe in the year 1901 formed the world-wide first international building exhibition on a lasting basis and influenced to today numerous exhibitions and urban development projects. Above all, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens set new impulses with their modern and future-oriented architecture and interior design, which were further developed in the Werkbund founded by them and later by the Bauhaus. It is no coincidence that the Bauhaus directors Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe worked for Behrens early in their careers and got to know their combination of craftsmanship, artistic design and industrial production there. In the post-war period, the ideas of the artists' colony Darmstadt again provided the inspiration for the reconstruction of the city as a design and architecture center based on several "master buildings" by leading architects such as Otto Bartning, Ernst Neufert and Max Taut.

The theme of this 5th edition is « The intuition of the gesture ». The gesture of an artist’s body movement is the starting point of the performance. They carry inside them the intuition of the entire work and its creative power. The body is the common denominator, an essential interdisciplinary element.
