Exhibition Glasgow Style: Arts & Crafts from 1890-1930 at Blackwell in Cumbria – until 31 December 2014

The end of the nineteenth century saw Glasgow’s artists emerge as accomplished and talented crafts people. Born at the highly influential Glasgow School of Art and blending together the imagery of the Celtic Revival with influences from Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement, the term ‘the Glasgow Style’ was coined and came to represent this distinctive style developed in the west of Scotland.

This exhibition explores the unique skills of some of the leading makers associated with this period including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Talwin Morris, Jessie Marion King, Ernest Archibald Taylor and Margaret and Frances Macdonald, showing the strength and prominence of Glaswegian Arts and Crafts.

Call for contributions Vienna: 1900: Brussels – until 31 December 2014

International Workshop/Publication

Between the 1880’s and the 1920’s, an international network of transcultural exchanges led to accelerated innovations in multiple cultural fields in many parts of Europe. Strong emphasis has been made by researchers and exhibitors on the relations between Vienna and Paris, which was considered the capital of culture, attracting craftsmen, artists, musicians, and writers from all over Europe.

We are looking for book contributions in literature, theatre, architecture, design, music, opera, psychoanalysis, politics, popular culture, visual arts, and all cultural fields acknowledging and analysing the interdisciplinary and transcultural networks of Brussels and Vienna around 1900.

In cooperation with the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta, we are planning to publish a volume and to discuss the contributions in a workshop in Edmonton (September 10-12, 2015). We will be considering circulating all accepted contributions to participants, beforehand.

The abstracts (300 words and short biography) must be sent by December 31, 2014
