Travelling exhibition The Nature of Art Nouveau 1 in Barcelona – from 9 October to 28 December 2015


Organised by the Réseau Art Nouveau Network in the framework of the European project "Art Nouveau & Ecology" (2010-2015) supported by the Culture 2007-2013 programme of the European Commission, the exhibition comprises two identical concurrent exhibitions and has begun its journey to all partner cities in October 2013.

After Riga, the exhibition The Nature of Art Nouveau 1 is presented in Barcelona at the Museu del Disseny, fourth step of its European journey, from the 9 October until 28 December 2014.

This exhibition is free and bilingual Catalan-English.

The Réseau Art Nouveau Network now Cultural Route of the Council of Europe!


The Réseau Art Nouveau Network is delighted to announce that it has been approved for certification as a Council of Europe Cultural Route by the Governing Board of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes (EPA), following the final defense which took place on 11 April 2014 in Luxembourg.

Through numerous activities (travelling exhibitions, colloquiums, publications, activities for children…), the Réseau Art Nouveau Network indeed created since 1999 an active cooperation and an exchange of experiences between multiple European actors concerned by the study and the conservation of the European and International Art Nouveau heritage, as well as by its promotion and diffusion towards the public while underlining the cultural values and the European dimension of this heritage.

It answers thus to the different requested criteria for the granting of this mention (representative theme of the European values common to several countries; projects of multilateral long-term cooperation of scientific research, of heritage conservation and enhancement – especially towards the young Europeans; organisation in independent and structured network…) and has been recognized by the EPA of the Council of Europe as a “a cultural, educational heritage and tourism co-operation project aiming at the development and promotion of an itinerary or a series of itineraries based on a historic route, a cultural concept, figure or phenomenon with a transnational importance and significance for the understanding and respect of common European values.” (Annexe to Resolution CM/Res(2013)66)

It joins the 26 others Cultural Routes certified yet for a three-years collaboration especially with the European Institute of Cultural Routes (EICR), technical body set up in 1998 to ensure the continuity and development of the Cultural Routes programme in the 50 signatory countries of the European Cultural Convention.

The Cultural Routes programme was launched by the Council of Europe in 1987. Its objective was to demonstrate, by means of a journey through space and time, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe contributes to a shared cultural heritage. The Cultural Routes put into practice the fundamental principles of the Council of Europe: human rights, cultural democracy, cultural diversity and identity, dialogue, mutual exchange and enrichment across boundaries and centuries.

Call for papers II coupDefouet International Congress in Barcelona – from 25 to 28 June 2015


Breaking the Art Nouveau Glass Ceiling

The Art Nouveau European Route brings together local governments and other institutions in the common quest for the protection, promotion and diffusion of Art Nouveau heritage.

To fully explore and bring to light the value of Art Nouveau heritage, therefore, a Congress organised by the Art Nouveau European Route cannot limit its scope to the analyses and interpretation of the tangible heritage; it must go deeper into the reality of the communities that created it.

In this second edition of the coupDefouet International Congress, we propose to shed new light on an aspect that has been studied very little, if at all: the important contribution of women artists to the development of Art Nouveau. In a nutshell: women as artists, women as creators, women as promoters and protagonists of Art Nouveau. Coupled with this ambition, we also wish to revisit the widely studied and interpreted representation of the female aesthetic and ideal in Art Nouveau, with new contributions on the matter.

A further strand will focus on little-known Art Nouveau cities, in which we expect to discover creative centres of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that have not until now been widely publicised. A similar section on research in progress to the first congress, one in which we welcome presentations from both seasoned and young researchers, will complete the thematic strands of the programme.

The final deadline for submissions is 1 December 2014

Exhibition Lechner, A Creative Genius at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest – from 19 November 2014 to 31 May 2015


In 2014 the Museum commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Ödön Lechner (1845–1914), one of the greatest Hungarian architects and one of the original geniuses of the European architectural scene at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. To mark this anniversary, the Institute of Art History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest are jointly organizing an international conference and an exhibition.

This exhibition presents the whole scope of the work of the architect Ödön Lechner. Special attention is paid to five major works, nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site status: the Kecskemét City Hall, the parish church of Budapest-Kőbánya, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Institute of Geology, and the Postal Savings Bank. Visitors can familiarise themselves with these through the architect’s original plans and drawings, as well as period and modern photographs. Working drawings of the ornaments so crucial to Lechner’s work, the publications which inspired him, and examples of the Zsolnay ceramic in which they were realized are also presented. One of the rooms evokes the world of the Japan Coffee House, Lechner’s second home, another acommodates a panoramic movie of his major works.

Exhibition Ways to Modernism at the MAK in Vienna – from 17 December 2014 to 14 April 2015


Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) and Adolf Loos (1870–1933) were the most important architects and designers in Vienna around 1900 in the generation after Otto Wagner. They developed two contrary approaches to the expression of individuality and self-realization among modern consumers. Josef Hoffmann followed a revolutionary path that led to the creation of utilitarian objects and architecture as aesthetic products in an ever-changing array of new designs. Adolf Loos pursued an evolutionary strategy that viewed utilitarian objects and architecture not as art products, but as the discrete background for individual lifestyles. These two contrary mindsets represent fundamental interpretations of the tasks of modern architects and designers as well as different images of modern lifestyles of the emancipated citizen.

Exhibition The Norwegian Japonism at the Jugendstilsenteret in Ålesund - from 26 September 2014 to 7 April 2015


The movement that is now spreading from Japan across Europe”

This quote from the Norwegian artist Gerhard Munthe (1849–1929) refers to one of the main trends in European art from the mid-19th century through the early decades of the 20th century.

In 1853, Japan opened its borders to the outside world after 200 years of isolation. This lead to a cult of all things Japanese among European artists – a movement labelled as Japonism from the 1860s–70s onward. This Japanese-inspired art did not constitute a style as such, but greatly influenced a number of styles in European art. In the 1880s and 1890s, Japonism became a major ingredient of the Art Nouveau style. In Norway, Art Nouveau peaked in popularity in the years between 1890 and 1910.

This exhibition looks at the connections between the Art Nouveau style, the nation-building project in Norway, and the Japonism movement as expressed in Norwegian Art Nouveau. Starting with Gerhard Munthe, considered the leading proponent of Japonism in Norway, the exhibition highlights connections between Japonism and the distinct national character of Norwegian Art Nouveau in terms of technique, range of motifs, format, and choice of materials.

New permanent exhibition Palau Güell: A look at furniture at the Palau Güell in Barcelona


Palau Güell, a look at furniture is a permanent exhibition located in the bedroom floor that is integrated into the tour of the palace. In the rooms of the children Güell, hitherto closed to the public, you can see the original furniture that decorated the palace when the Güell family lived, as well as some modernist furniture owned by the Province of Barcelona (Diputació de Barcelona).

The sample is divided in two areas: "The decoration of Güell" and "The decorators of Modernism," which relate to the two stages of the building: the first, when it was owned by Eusebi Güell and his family, and, second, when it passed into the hands of Barcelona Provincial Council from 1945 and became a center of vindication of Gaudi and Catalan Modernism, while it was collecting furniture of cabinet makers, leading decorators of that time.

Exceptionally the Güell i de Sentmenat family temporarily handed two iconic pieces exhibited, designed by Antonio Gaudi at Palau Güell: the chaise longue Isabel Lopez and one of the original chairs called Cat and Mice. Furthermore, the family has also yielded a terracotta modernist bust, as a tribute to what would be the header architect of the family between 1880 and 1918, made by Carmen M. Malet and Travy.

Exhibition Hans Christiansen - The retrospective in Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt – from 12 October to 1 February 2015


Retrospective on the complete works of the artist colony member of the first hour: With Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) is an as versatile as exemplary Jugendstil artists to rediscover, who found his vocation in Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt.

Hans Christiansen is one of the most important representatives of Jugendstil, especially with his drafts in the field of arts and crafts. In Paris where matured into an artist, he was appointed in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in Darmstadt, where he was among the first seven members of the artists' colony. On the Mathildenhöhe he blossomed and excelled as a genuine work of art enthusiasts in painting, architecture and applied art as well as a designer of lights festivals. For the first time the full range of this versatile artist is presented: The retrospective presents his house on the Mathildenhöhe, room facilities, glass pane, jewellery, posters, paintings, drawings, textile art and ceramics in different spatial ensembles - including previously unknown like his fashion and poster designs from the 1920s.

The major retrospective, the first ever to Hans Christiansen, will be seen in four German institutions. The kick-off will make Mathildenhöhe as the first step, and then will follow the Bröhan Museum in Berlin, the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich and the Museumsberg in Flensburg, where the exhibition tour will end just before the 150th anniversary of the artist in his hometown.

Exhibition Kokoschka & Gauguin decrypted at the Fin-de-Siècle Museum in Brussels – from 22 July 2014 to 25 January 2015

Exhibition "Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec" at the Kunstforum Wien in Vienna – until 25 January 2015


The Path to Modernism

In October 2014 the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is showing the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec ever held in Austria. The 150th anniversary of this spectacular artist’s birth is a fitting occasion for holding this exhibition, in which loans from international collections present Lautrec’s multifaceted oeuvre and his extraordinary observational skills in different genres – paintings, works on paper, lithographs and posters.

Besides the illustrious “loud” posters for the pleasure palaces of Montmartre, the foundation of Lautrec’s international fame, we can also discover the lesser known Toulouse Lautrec: paintings in muted colors facilitating an intimate form of portraying human psychology, drawings with pen and pencil, ideal for a pithy characterization of the subject. The linking and juxtaposition of different modes of expression, themes and concepts are a reflection of the artist’s complex figure on the brink between two centuries. A unique show, which illuminates new aspects of one of the great protagonists at the dawning of Modernism.

Call for public subscription chandelier decorated with seaweed of L. Majorelle for the Ecole de Nancy Museum – from 20 September 2014 to 4 January 2015

To mark the 50th anniversary of the museum in 2014, the Association of Friends of the Ecole de Nancy Museum (AAMEN) launched a public subscription for the purchase and restoration of the chandelier decorated with seaweed, ordered to Louis Majorelle in 1904. The Association wishes to acquire in favour of the collections of the Ecole de Nancy Museum, which does not possess this model.

Dismantled after World War II, the chandelier requires an intervention before it can be presented in the permanent collections. It will be thus entrust after the acquisition, to restorers of metal and fire Art. They will carry out cleaning, dusting, realize the missing parts, will review the assembly of the various components as well as electrical installation. This intervention should enable to present it again, functions to the exhibition rooms.

For the acquisition and restoration of this lamp, an amount of € 30,000 would be required for the Friends of the Ecole de Nancy Museum (AAMEN) to complete this operation. To finance this amount, the association appeals to the generosity of everyone, individuals and businesses, in order to buy and restore this work in the framework of the law on patronage. This support to a work of general interest, or patronage, entitles the donors to certain tax advantages. Thus, companies benefit from a tax reduction of 60% of the donation amount, and individuals from a 66% reduction.

Exhibition and Website Mackintosh Architecture at The Hunterian in Glasgow – from 18 July 2014 to 4 January 2015


A fresh look at a familiar icon
Mackintosh Architecture at The Hunterian

The landmark research project into Mackintosh’s architecture, which began in 2010, has been led by the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian. It presents the first comprehensive evaluation of Mackintosh’s architectural career, available on a free access website, www.mackintosh-architecture.gla.ac.uk from 18 July. The richly illustrated site includes a catalogue of Mackintosh’s architectural projects and architectural drawings, over 3000 images, 350 biographies, timeline, interactive map, glossary and bibliography.

The site will be launched with the first major exhibition to be devoted to Mackintosh’s architectural work. Mackintosh Architecture will present over 80 architectural drawings from The Hunterian and collections across the UK, many never exhibited before, alongside specially commissioned film, models and rarely seen archival material.

Based on the work of the research project, the exhibition challenges the familiar view of Mackintosh as the isolated genius by presenting the wider context of his architectural practice, introducing the contractors, suppliers and clients who supported the delivery of the buildings, and outlining the building process, from initial planning permission to final inspection.

The exhibition is supported by three special displays which showcase Mackintosh’s skills as a draughtsman and designer, largely drawn from The Hunterian’s unrivalled Mackintosh Collection: Mackintosh Travel Sketches; William Davidson: Art Collector; and C.R. Mackintosh: ‘Begonias’
