May Morris: Art & Life is the most comprehensive survey of May Morris’s work to date, bringing together over 80 works from collections around the UK, many of which have never been on public display.

The exhibition reveals the breadth of May's creative pursuits, featuring wallpaper and embroidery alongside jewellery, dresses and book designs, as well as sketches and watercolours. It focuses on May’s development of art embroidery – elevating needlework from a domestic craft to a serious art form – and highlights the extent of her influence in the UK and abroad, particularly the US.

A number of rarely seen works from public and private collections are featured in the exhibition, including a pair of expansive silk hangings, which May designed and embroidered in 1895 under the auspices of Morris & Co. The Spring and Summer, and Autumn and Winter panels are thought to have been commissioned for £150 making them most expensive entry in the Morris & Co. order book for that period, and a highlight of the exhibition.

Also on display for the first time is a hand painted Valentine card made by May for George Bernard Shaw in 1886, which was recently discovered among an uncatalogued album of cards sent to Shaw in the British Library's collection. May and Shaw were in love though he maintained he was too poor to marry her. He would later insist that a "Mystic Betrothal" had existed between them, yet this did not prevent him from establishing close relationships with other women at the same time. Despite being emotionally rebuffed, May recovered and the pair remained good friends.

La Femme dans l’Art Nouveau

Ce courant artistique né à la fin du 19e siècle, s'exprime dans tous les domaines des arts décoratifs. La "petite estampe", qu'est la carte postale, devient un lieu d'expression incontournable pour les grands illustrateurs tels Alfons Mucha ou Raphaël Kirchner. Thème centrale, "la Femme" s'y décline à l'infini sensuelle et mystérieuse mais aussi moderne et moqueuse sous les traits de la parisienne dont la figure se construit à cette époque

Le pouvoir de la ligne, Guimard et l'Art nouveau

Pour sa sixième édition du Temps des Collections, la Réunion des Musées Métropolitains accueillera les pièces maîtresses de la collection d’art décoratif du Musée d’Orsay dans 8 des musées de la métropole Rouen Normandie. Une exposition autour de la ferronnerie Art Nouveau et de l’architecte Hector Guimard sera à l'honneur au musée Le Secq des Tournelles. Parmi les chefs-d’œuvre de Guimard, il faut mentionner le bloc d'immeubles Castel Béranger (1894-1898), qui obtint en 1899 le prix de la plus belle façade de Paris, ainsi que les édicules d'entrée du métro parisien (18991904), qui immortalisèrent son esthétique. Il s'illustra comme créateur mais également comme un véritable entrepreneur, par les liens qu'il sut nouer avec les industriels pour diffuser ses modèles, en particulier avec les Fonderies de Saint-Dizier, dont plusieurs pièces sont présentées dans l'exposition : « Satisfaire au programme de chacun, utiliser les ressources industrielles modernes, profiter des progrès de la science appliquée à toutes les branches de l'activité humaine, exprimer le caractère véritable de la matière, tels sont les principes auxquels se rattache le Style Guimard et qui se résument en trois mots : Logique, Harmonie et Sentiment ». Afin de compléter cette évocation de la ferronnerie Art Nouveau, la sélection des œuvres est enrichie de créations d'autres artistes, en particulier du Belge Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (1858-1910), ainsi que de plusieurs pièces spectaculaires issues de la collection du célèbre antiquaire Antonin Rispal (1920-2003).

A Bird's Eye View of Art Nouveau

A photo exhibition set up in front of the Reök Palace shows Szeged's most beautiful art nouveau buildings from an unusual perspective. The emphasis is on details that are often hidden from view. An exhibition of recent drone photos taken of 14 lovely Szeged buildings are now on display for passers-by on Ede Magyar Square. The exhibition's title also refers to an anecdote told about Ödön Lechner, one of the greatest geniuses of Hungarian art nouveau architecture. The story goes that one of Lechner's students had lodged the criticism that it was a shame to design such a splendid roof for one of the master's palaces, because nothing could be seen of it from street level. To this, Lechner replied, “The birds will see them!” The collection being displayed in front of the Reök Palace uses this thinking as its starting point. The novelty of the images is the fact that they show these stunning buildings from an angle that we only rarely see them, if ever. These thrilling photos reveal hidden details. The Reök Palace, built in 1907, is the most beautiful art nouveau building in Szeged, and perhaps all of Hungary. Often compared to Gaudí's structures in Barcelona, it was designed by the brilliant architect Ede Magyar as a residence for the hydraulic engineer Iván Reök. Even by European standards, the palace is one of the finest examples of art nouveau architecture. It serves as the point of origin for the A Bird's Eye View of Art Nouveau exhibition. Also included in the overview along with from the palace are the Ungár-Mayer House, also designed by Magyar, and the Raichle Palace. The latter was built based on the plans of architect J. Ferenc Raichle, a leading light of the art nouveau style in the Vojvodina region, in the same year that the Reök Palace was completed. Raichle was also responsible for the Gróf Palace, a beautiful and iconic Szeged building that also appears among the photos. Other images include the Deutsch Palace, the New Synagogue and the Tömörkény High School building. The exhibition will remain open in front of the REÖK Regional Art Center until 20 December. Compiled from footage from EURO-TV, it was organised by students working on a curatorial specialisation in the University of Szeged's philosophy master's degree programme under the direction of art historian Dr Róbert Nátyi.

A New Era: Scottish Modern Art 1900-1950

The exhibition examines the most progressive work made by Scottish artists as they absorbed and responded to the great movements of European modern art. More than 100 paintings, sculptures and works on paper by over 50 artists are on display. The exhibition charts Scottish modernism from when JD Fergusson and SJ Peploe experienced at first-hand the radical new work produced in Paris by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, to the turn of the 1950s, when emerging Scottish artists like Alan Davie, Doris Zinkeisen, William Gear, Margaret Mellis, and Eduardo Paolozzi were at the forefront of European contemporary art.

The exhibition is named after the New Era group established in Edinburgh in 1939 to show the experimental work of its members. As a compliment to A New Era, Magazines and Manifestos: British Periodicals from 1890 to 1950 is a display in the Keiller Library which explores the proliferation of ‘little magazines’ which became a preferred format for many literary and artistic groups, whose proponents were keen to spread the word and disseminate their new and often radical ideas to a wider public.

Alphonse Mucha Retrospective

The show is conceived as a comprehensive survey consisting of over 200 pieces, organised and produced by Arthemisia in collaboration with the Mucha Foundation, and conceived by Tomoko Sato, curator of the foundation since 2007. The exhibition highlights six facets of Mucha’s personality: Bohemian; picture maker for people; cosmopolitan; mystic; patriot and philosopher. Through these aspects, the exhibition looks at the development of his artistic career and how he grew as a man, living through one of the most turbulent times in European history. The large number of works on show includes paintings like Self-portrait (1899,) posters like the one created for Gismonda (1894) and another featuring Sarah Bernhardt as La Princesse Lointaine (1896), as well as “France Embracing Bohemia“, in 2018, when this exhibition ends, is the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia and the painting of this work. The painting shows the spirit of freedom embodied in the figure of France giving the kiss of Freedom to the figure of Bohemia, which has been suffering under the oppression of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The wide-ranging selection was enabled by the Mucha Foundation, an institution that has been working for years to advance a better understanding of the artist worldwide. This one-artist show in Madrid is able to reconstruct the full breadth and depth of Mucha’s artistic practice thanks to loans from the foundation. The show features key elements from the artist’s life and work—his Czech and Slavic cultural identity and the love he felt for his family and his land of birth. Images of beguiling women immortalised by his effortless brushwork are combined with innovative maquettes and typographic designs to showcase the extreme originality of Alphonse Mucha’s oeuvre. Overall, the exhibition affords an extraordinary portrait of this great Czech creator, celebrated in Art History as the originator of a style that would later spread throughout the world under the name of Art Nouveau, Stile Liberty, Secessionsstil, Modernisme or Jugendstil.

Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau

Our 2017 special exhibition season concludes with the Art Nouveau designs of Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), in the eagerly anticipated exhibition Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau. Drawn from one of the finest private collections of Mucha’s work in the United States, this exhibition features 75 works by the celebrated Czech master, whose varied, expressive, and seductive imagery helped form and later shape the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century. Taking inspiration from the unruly aspects of the natural world, Art Nouveau influenced art and architecture, especially in graphic work and illustration, with its sinuous lines and whiplash curves. Through rare, original lithographs and proofs, paintings, drawings, and ephemera, this exhibition examines the broad range of Mucha’s work, largely created during the 1890s, at a time when the emphasis was on creating a new art fit for the new century. The exhibition and tour are organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays from the Mucha Foundation and art historian Gabriel Weisberg. The catalogue, as well as a variety of other Mucha-related merchandise, will be available for purchase in The Museum Store.
