Barcelona and Modernity: Picasso, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí
Dates:01/01/2050-01/01/2999
By William H. Robinson, Jordi Falgàs, and Carmen Belen Lord, with foreword by Robert Hughs, 2007. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudí to Dalí” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 7, 2007–June 3, 2007. During the years after the “September Revolution” of 1868, Barcelona experienced tremendous industrial growth and emerged as the most politically and culturally progressive city in Spain. This volume examines a remarkable 71-year period when Barcelona transformed itself into one of the most dynamic centers of modernist art and architecture in Europe. Focusing on the Catalan Renaixença, Modernisme, Noucentisme, avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, and artistic reactions to the Spanish civil war, essays by an extraordinary international team of scholars offer new insights into the work of Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and scores of others, by setting them in context with the art of their teachers, colleagues, and rivals. Featuring more than 250 works in a variety of media, this intriguing book explores how Catalan artists derived inspiration from local traditions while contributing their own innovations to international modernism. 524 pages, 600 full-color illustrations, 9 in. x 12 1/4 in. Available in hardcover (clothbound, with jacket), or paper.

Between lights : Lamps and artefacts of illumination with style
Dates:01/01/2050-01/01/2999
“There is no light so domestic as nocturnal light, nor space so private as that which is tenderly illuminated by lamps”, with these words the architect Luis Fernandez-Galiano introduced one of the areas of an exhibition on interior spaces referring to nocturnal lights. It is to say that the private space is recognized by nocturnal lighting, which, according to the moment, is the flame of a candle that trembles or the lampshades which project conical incandescent forms as if they were domestic lighthouses. Light transfigures that which it touches and the variety of lamps is not as important as the variety of lights. Thus, light sources determine a particular atmosphere. To write about a type of artefact which is so familiar as lamps seems to lead to a reflection on their appearance and function, which have varied over time. By way of introduction we will sketch out a few considerations, that are in no way intended as a history, nor a stylistic sequence. In fact, we want to offer you some ingredients with which to reflect and which could be useful for future in-depth study on the fascinating history of human light. 15 euros

Brunfaut’s, Progressive Architecture
Dates:08/02/2013-09/06/2013
