Celebration « La Pedrera, 100 years »

It is almost a hundred years of the signature of the document certifying the completion of La Pedrera works (on 31 October 1912) and the Fundació CatalunyaCaixa wants to celebrate with all the residents of the city and visitors. To commemorate the centenary, a programme of activities has been put together that is a blend of the essentially festive occasions typical of any celebration together with various cultural and artistic events related to the singular nature of a monumental building such as La Pedrera, designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí. Barcelona to host the first Art Nouveau international congress

The first international congress fully devoted to the Art Nouveau style will be held in Barcelona from 26 to 29 June 2013. This congress, an activity of the Art Nouveau European Route association, is organised by the Barcelona City Council on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Art Nouveau magazine coupDefouet. This scientific encounter will draw together professionals in art history, architecture, the applied and decorative arts, and heritage management, as well as art lovers in general, to explore future trends and challenges in Art Nouveau heritage in a context of transnational exchange. The Scientific Committee is coordinated by the University of Barcelona Art department in the supervision of the content to be presented at the Congress within the established theme strands. During this congress will be tackled how the suburbs were also creation centres, images and ideas diffusers and concrete cases from the European continent will be presented, which will bring new experiences and resources for the researchers, organisations and the public in general. The sessions of the coupDefouet International Congress will take place at the University and also at Antoni Gaudí’s famous Casa Milà-La Pedrera building. Between lights : Lamps and artefacts of illumination with style

“There is no light so domestic as nocturnal light, nor space so private as that which is tenderly illuminated by lamps”, with these words the architect Luis Fernandez-Galiano introduced one of the areas of an exhibition on interior spaces referring to nocturnal lights. It is to say that the private space is recognized by nocturnal lighting, which, according to the moment, is the flame of a candle that trembles or the lampshades which project conical incandescent forms as if they were domestic lighthouses. Light transfigures that which it touches and the variety of lamps is not as important as the variety of lights. Thus, light sources determine a particular atmosphere. To write about a type of artefact which is so familiar as lamps seems to lead to a reflection on their appearance and function, which have varied over time. By way of introduction we will sketch out a few considerations, that are in no way intended as a history, nor a stylistic sequence. In fact, we want to offer you some ingredients with which to reflect and which could be useful for future in-depth study on the fascinating history of human light. 15 euros

Pensar i interpretar l'oci. Passatemps, entreteniments, aficions i addiccions a la Barcelona del 1900

L’efervescència de la Barcelona del 1900, en procés de modernització, va afavorir l’aparició d’una cultura de l’oci que va viure un moment sense precedents. Els barcelonins utilitzaven el seu temps lliure i es relacionaven entre ells amb iniciatives i activitats de caràcter molt divers, algunes de les quals ja existien i d’altres eren de nova creació. Més enllà de les celebracions tradicionals (festes majors, fontades, processons), es van emprendre innovadores formes de consum cultural, per a tots els gustos i per a totes les butxaques. Es van obrir nombroses sales de cinema, els primers parcs d’atraccions i nous teatres, gràcies als quals el Paral·lel va esdevenir l’epicentre de la nit barcelonina. Aquest llibre ofereix un repertori d’imatges de les diversions, dels entreteniments, de les aficions d’aquella fascinant època de contrastos, la del modernisme.

Le petit monde de l’architecte Henri Jacobs 1864-1935

L’historien de l’art Franco Borsi a écrit qu’après Horta et Hankar, Henri Jacobs a été l’architecte le plus intéressant de l’Art nouveau. Aussi à l’aise dans une architecture privée élégante, raffinée dans l’harmonie des matériaux et des couleurs, tout en restant classique dans le plan, que dans le logement social ou le logement moyen, où il privilégie le confort sans tomber dans la banalité et sans négliger l’apparence, il est, avant tout, le principal bâtisseur des écoles de Bruxelles, mais figure aussi parmi les principaux artisans de l’architecture scolaire en Brabant, se jouant des diverses contraintes et des règlements émis par les différentes autorités. Ce livre retrace le parcours de trois générations de Jacobs : Henri Jacobs lui-même, son père, enseignant, et son oncle, architecte, qui s’illustrèrent particulièrement à Saint-Josse, grâce à qui il est allé à bonne école, puis son fils, Henri Aimé, qui grandira au milieu des tables à dessiner et prendra sa succession. Jacobs a connu le succès en son temps. Le livre s’efforce de mettre en évidence son réseau de relations, de contacts, de clients, d’artistes, ce « petit monde » qui l’entoure durant toute sa carrière. Parmi ses proches, il faut relever Godefroid Devreese, le sculpteur, Privat Livemont, le peintre, et Paul Gilson, le musicien. Si ses principales réalisations se situent à Schaerbeek, où il est le principal architecte du Foyer schaerbeekois et où se dresse son chef-d’oeuvre, le groupe scolaire Josaphat, beaucoup sont aussi emblématiques de l’architecture bruxelloise en général, comme l’ancienne École normale Émile André rue des Capucins, plusieurs écoles de Laeken, le groupe scolaire Félix Govaert à Auderghem, l’actuel Athénée d’Uccle I et l’école du square Marlow ainsi que d’autres bâtiments scolaires à Uccle, l’École en couleurs et l’école de la rue des Alliés à Forest, les deux écoles de la rue Herkoliers et l’Athénée à Koekelberg. Mais il construit aussi en Brabant, de Hal à Rhode- Saint-Genèse, de Londerzeel à Tirlemont, en passant par Grimbergen, Zaventem et Diegem. Ce livre est la première monographie consacrée aux Jacobs. Depuis plus de vingt ans, l’auteur, archéologue issue de l’Université libre de Bruxelles et active dans la protection du patrimoine bruxellois, qui consacre ses recherches à l’architecture scolaire en Brabant, s’intéresse à ces personnalités. L’ouvrage révèle une importante liste chronologique d’oeuvres, dont la plupart sont inédites, ainsi que des encarts, mettant en lumière, soit des projets ou des réalisations, soit des personnages, familiers, entrepreneurs, clients que les Jacobs ont côtoyés. Art in the Street: European Posters

The international poster mania of the 1890s made fine art accessible to the masses, bringing it out of the salon into the streets and shop windows. Great posters proliferated, however, long after this “golden age,” as revealed by the standout images in “Art in the Street” from the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s. With about 40 posters in all—highlights from the Museum’s collection of some 2,500—the show takes in virtually every major style in poster design of this era, from Art Nouveau to Russian photomontage. Also on view are major works by Jules Chéret, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Pierre Bonnard, as well as less familiar work from Northern Europe, including a Secession poster by Wassily Kandinsky and a selection of Dutch posters from around 1910. The show concludes with several Swiss “object posters,” bold illustrations of an isolated product that dispense with text.
