Travelling exhibition "The Nature of Art Nouveau"- "La Natura dell’Art Nouveau"

Organised by the Réseau Art Nouveau Network in the framework of the European project "Art Nouveau & Ecology" (2010-2015) supported by the Culture 2007-2013 programme of the European Commission, the exhibition comprises two identical concurrent exhibitions and has begun its journey to all partner cities in October 2013.

After Aveiro, the exhibition The Nature of Art Nouveau 2 will be presented in Milan at the Exhibition Space of the Palazzo Lombardia, seat of the Regione Lombardia, sixth step of its European journey, from 26 March until 24 April 2015.

This exhibition is free and bilingual Italian-English.

Le musée Lalique raconte en 2015 l’histoire verrière de cette région, histoire qui a incité René Lalique à construire une manufacture à Wingen-sur-Moder en 1921. A travers des objets archéologiques, mais également des objets d’art, des tableaux, des plans… l’exposition Le verre au quotidien retrace cette épopée, s’intéressant tant à la question des techniques que des usages et rappelant comment le verre est devenu omniprésent dans notre quotidien.

Le Centre de recherche sur les économies, les sociétés, les arts et les techniques CRESAT (EA 3436), en collaboration avec le musée du papier peint de Rixheim organise un colloque sur les artistes & la production des arts décoratifs et industriels de l’époque moderne à nos jours.

Après les travaux initiés en 2010, lors des Journées d’histoire industrielle, consacrées au thème de « l’art et l’industrie », puis en 2014 la journée d’études sur « le dessinateur dans les arts décoratifs et industriels, un technicien ou un artiste ? Entre savoir-faire et créativité », ce colloque est l’occasion de poursuivre les questionnements autour des relations entre l’art et la fabrication d’objets, de produits, en rassemblant les chercheurs qui s’intéressent à ces questions en France et en Europe.

Avant la fin du XIXe siècle, à la suite des débats autour des relations entre l’art et l’industrie, la création artistique d’objets reste perçue à travers l’opposition entre arts majeurs ou beaux-arts et arts mineurs. L’échelle de valeur, imposée par l’organisation de l’art à l’époque moderne en Occident, explique sans doute qu’associer le nom d’un artiste à celui d’un objet relève du défi, à l’exception de quelques rares exemples à la Renaissance. Pourtant, des artistes ont toujours contribué à la production d’objets usuels, de manière plus ou moins directe. D’une part, la circulation des modèles a favorisé la propagation des formes et des styles et d’autre part, les manufacturiers/industriels ont régulièrement eu recours aux services d’artistes pour renouveler la création de leurs productions.

Ce colloque propose d’explorer les différents aspects de la contribution des artistes dans les manufactures à l’époque moderne et la circulation des modèles à l’époque moderne, puis dans une perspective chronologique, d’appréhender l’évolution du rôle des artistes pour les productions d’arts industriels au XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, et sa place au sein des entreprises, artistes indépendants ou directeurs artistiques.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was the first Japanese artist to be internationally recognized, and he continues to inspire artists around the world. As the home of the largest and finest collection of Japanese art outside Japan—including the greatest variety of Hokusai works in any museum—the MFA is uniquely positioned to offer a comprehensive exhibition of this remarkable artist. Drawing from extensive holdings of paintings, woodblock prints, and illustrated printed books, the Museum will showcase an array of works from Hokusai’s seven-decade career, including lesser-known pieces depicting whimsical instructions on how to draw, dynamic paintings on paper lanterns, and elaborate cut-out dioramas. Also displayed are some of the most famous images in Japanese art, including Under the Wave Off Kanagawa (Great Wave) (about 1830–31)—from the legendary series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji—and the brilliantly colored multi-panel screen painting Phoenix (1835). Spanning Hokusai’s work from his 20s through his 80s, the exhibition will explore common themes through sections dedicated to topics such as landscapes, nature, fantasy, and the “Floating World” of urban culture (including depictions of the Kabuki theater and the Yoshiwara pleasure district). Works that depict Japanese historical and literary motifs will be featured along with “perspective prints” with exaggerated vanishing points, often used in toy peep shows. An extremely delicate silk square of a mythological Chinese lion, likely used as a gift wrapper (fukusa), will also be included, in a rare public display of the fragile work. An illustrated publication will accompany the exhibition.

Glasgow's Gilded Age 1864-1914: Glamour & Grit Conference

The conference will highlight those Glasgow designers who originally established the city's reputation at the time of the Aesthetic Movement and Mark Twain’s so called Gilded Age. Glasgow’s international reputation for design and manufacture sprang forth from the city's industries, as well as its educational institutions, and its influence spread across the globe through trade. This laid the foundation for Glasgow’s inimitable ‘style’.

We want to invite our guests on a unique sensory experience, considering both the glamour and the grit of industrial Glasgow. Our speakers will be discussing a wide range of topics, including; the interiors of Glasgow’s finest buildings, architectural ornament and stained glass within the city, and the movers and shakers of both the artistic and industrial spheres.

Prof. John Hume OBE, BSc ARCST, Hon FRIAS, FSA Scot; Chairman of the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments, Patron of GCHT, and life-long supporter of Glasgow’s industrial and artistic heritage, will be speaking about the industries and the individuals who produced or commissioned art in Glasgow throughout the period.

Other speakers include Dr. David Mitchell MSC IHBC ProfICME FSA Scot, Director of Conservation and Trustee of the Scottish Ironwork Foundation, Dr. Robyne Erica Calvert, Mackintosh Research Fellow for the Glasgow School of Art and Max Donnelly, Curator of 19th-Century Furniture at the V&A Museum.

We believe that it is crucial to the promotion of Glasgow as a world city, and that through it we will be celebrating its vibrant artistic and industrial history, encouraging academic study of the period of this ‘gilded age’, and promoting Glasgow as a place for cultural and historic tourism.

Expressionisms - The Collection from Kokoschka to Anzinger

Based on the impressions gained during her first examination of the museum holdings, the new curator for modern art, Beatrice von Bormann, has devised an exhibition about Expressionism. It features paintings, sculptures, drawings, and graphic prints by about eighty artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The focus is on Austrian and German Expressionism, from the early period before World War I to the Neo‑Expressionism of the 1960s and 1970s, and the Neuen Wilden.

The art of the early 1900's was characterized by innovations and experiments. The era that includes movements such as Art Nouveau, Secession, Art Deco and Art Nouveau, has some of the most beautiful works of art produced with the design of the Heavenly Jerusalem, perhaps most notably in the field of religious art in the form of stained-glass windows, frescoes and carvings. These works are almost never in the major centers of the Art Nouveau - ie Brussels, Vienna, Prague or Paris - emerged, but aloof, often in small towns or in the countryside. Only a small number of works of art is documented or recorded scientifically, and so it was necessary to do research for this work to a much greater extent than usual for artists, history and material condition.

Die Kunst der Zeit um 1900 war geprägt von Innovationen und Experimenten. Die Epoche, die Strömungen wie den Jugendstil, die Secession, Art deco und Art nouveau umfasst, hat einige der schönsten Kunstwerke mit dem Motiv des Himmlischen Jerusalem hervorgebracht, vor allem wohl auf dem Gebiet der Sakralkunst in Form von Kirchenfenstern, Fresken und Steinmetzarbeiten. Diese Arbeiten sind so gut wie nie in den großen Zentren des Jugendstils - also Brüssel, Wien, Prag oder Paris - entstanden, sondern abseits, oft in Kleinstädten oder auf dem Lande. Nur eine geringe Zahl der Kunstwerke ist dokumentiert oder wissenschaftlich erfasst, und so war es notwendig, für dieses Arbeiten in weitaus größerem Umfang als sonst üblich nach Künstlern, Entstehungsgeschichte und Materialzustand zu recherchieren.

Papa, Maman, Horta et moi !

Durant les vacances scolaires, le musée Horta ouvrira ses portes chaque matinée aux enfants et parents pour une visite adaptée à chaque âge. L’espace des domestiques de la maison sera exceptionnellement ouvert pour l’occasion.
La visite prend la forme d’un jeu de rôles pour les plus grands et d’une chasse au trésor pour les plus petits et permet de découvrir de manière pro-active l’extraordinaire maison et l’univers merveilleux de Victor Horta.
Après la visite, un atelier créatif sera proposé afin de permettre à tous de créer une œuvre inspirée par la nature, en rapport avec l’Art Nouveau – atelier différent chaque semaine (vitrail, mosaïque, peinture murale, maison Art Nouveau en papier, animaux en papier).

Fermeture temporaire de la Maison Autrique à Bruxelles – du 16 février au 31 décembre 2015

En raison de travaux de restauration portant sur les façades et d’une actualisation de la scénographie, l’ouverture au public sera réduite dès le lundi 16 février 2015 et jusqu’à la fin de l’année. Durant cette période seuls seront possibles des événements ponctuels et visites sur rendez-vous, en fonction du calendrier du chantier.

Depuis dix ans, la Maison Autrique est ouverte au public grâce à la détermination conjointe de plusieurs amis et à l’intervention de la Commune de Schaerbeek qui s’est portée acquéreur du bien. François Schuiten et Benoît Peeters sont à l’origine du projet de réhabilitation de cette œuvre de jeunesse du célèbre Victor Horta. Ils en ont fait une « maison des maisons», une habitation poétique suspendue dans le temps.

Oscar Wilde's Salomé: Illustrating death and desire

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish writer and poet who became one of London’s most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Wilde’s retelling of the beheading of John the Baptist became the controversial play, Salomé, and was banned on the London stage in 1893. Illustrators have been attracted to its rhythmic prose and subject matter ever since. Oscar Wilde’s Salomé: Illustrating Death and Desire presents the complete sets of the first and the most recent illustrations inspired by tragedy, including lithographs by symbolist artis Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872–1898) and engravings by Barry Moser (b. 1940). Books and periodicals featuring illustrations by Louis Jou, André Derain, and Valenti Angelo, among others, will also be on view.

Retrospective on the complete works of the artist colony member of the first hour: With Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) is an as versatile as exemplary Jugendstil artists to rediscover, who found his vocation in Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt.

Hans Christiansen is one of the most important representatives of Jugendstil, especially with his drafts in the field of arts and crafts. In Paris where matured into an artist, he was appointed in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in Darmstadt, where he was among the first seven members of the artists' colony. On the Mathildenhöhe he blossomed and excelled as a genuine work of art enthusiasts in painting, architecture and applied art as well as a designer of lights festivals. For the first time the full range of this versatile artist is presented: The retrospective presents his house on the Mathildenhöhe, room facilities, glass pane, jewellery, posters, paintings, drawings, textile art and ceramics in different spatial ensembles - including previously unknown like his fashion and poster designs from the 1920s.

The major retrospective, the first ever to Hans Christiansen, will be seen in four German institutions. The kick-off will make Mathildenhöhe as the first step, and then will follow the Bröhan Museum in Berlin, the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich and the Museumsberg in Flensburg, where the exhibition tour will end just before the 150th anniversary of the artist in his hometown.

White nights. Carel de Neree tot babberich, Henri van Booven and Louis Couperus

Around 1900, writer Henri van Booven (1877-1964) befriended the artist Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880-1964). The latter worked in the style of Aubrey Beardsley, while Van Booven would become Louis Couperus' first biographer. He got to know the writer's work thanks to his friend De Nerée. The author introduced the artist to the work of Aubrey Beardsley. Both admired Louis Couperus, especially the novel Extasy (1892). For the first time in one hundred years a series of drawings which De Nerée made for this novel which will be on show together. The exhibition also features documents and books from Van Booven's private archive and library.

The exhbition is put together by Sander Bink, specialist on the Dutch Fin-de Siècle. To the occasion of this show the beautifully illustrated book Carel de Nerée tot Babberich en Henri van Booven. Den Haag in het fin de siècle will presented at the vernissage (published by WBOOKS, Apeldoorn, together with the Louis Couperus Museum).
