Building for a new life at the Jugendstilsenteret, Alesund - 24 September to 31 May 2012

The photo exhibition " Building for a new Life" shows the construction of the art nouveau buildings of Bad Nauheim (Germany). The Photos were taken by the photographer Albert Schmidt during the construction 1905 - 1911 of the spa complex Sprudelhof. The building site, the bath houses, charming open court yards, bath cells as well as the technical facilities were built in  Art Nouveau style. The photos do not only show the architecture but also the spa life, so it can be called a sociology of working and cultural life.
This exhibition, created in 2006 for the 100th anniversary of Sprudelhof, was presented in the Goethe Institue in Brussels in 2007 and travels for the second time to a Réseau Art Nouveau Network partner abroad, i.e. in Alesund.
Some original object from bath cells, like clocks, tiles as well as historic maps, postcards and documents on Norwegian spa guests in Bad Nauheim complete the presentation.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela - European Master - at the Helsinki Art Museum - from 23 September 2011 to 15 January 2012

Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s (1865-1931) artistic work shows boundless sensitivity and yet also a passionate desire to express. It contains both small-scale works and monumental compositions. His character was a combination of sustained political conviction and mercurial impulsiveness. He was prone to both wanderlust and homesickness. It was this weaving together of opposites that formed the core of Gallen-Kallela’s art and which suggests links with Finnish history as much as with the broad directions of modern art.
The works in the exhibition are mainly from 1884-1910, a period easily described as the peak of Gallen-Kallela’s output. It is also a period in European art history that both preceded and anticipated the forward march of abstract art. During that time Gallen-Kallela was known as an artist whose distinctive Nordic style and idiom stood apart from that of most other artists. It was possible to become familiar with his work through many exhibitions around Europe. Important critics wrote about him, and he was well known in avant-garde circles. In Finland, he was known as a leading artist of the emerging nation and as a pioneer of the visual arts.
This exhibition presents the artist’s aesthetically most brilliant peak, a selection of masterworks. After Helsinki the exhibition will be presented in Paris and Düsseldorf. It is the broadest survey of Gallen-Kallela’s art ever organised in France or Germany.
This exhibition is organised by the Helsinki Art Museum, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf.

"Melancholy and Provocation. The Egon Schiele-Project" at the Leopold Museum in Vienna - 23 September 2011 to 16 April 2012

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the Leopold Museum will dedicate its 2011 autumn exhibition to the oeuvre of EgonSchiele. The exhibition’s title “Melancholy and Provocation” refers primarily to the early oeuvre of the artist who died in 1918 when only 28 years of age. For Schiele‘s early chief works, which he created from 1910 when he was only 20 years old, are characterized by a strong sense of melancholy and sadness, but also by his fascination with the unusual and the ecstatic. His first solo exhibition, held at the art salon Miethke in 1911, was dominated by elegiac works, revealing a dark and mystical coloring, a melancholy subject matter as well as the artist’s radically physical manner of self-portrayal. Brussels Heritage Days -17 & 18 September 2011

While it is relatively simple to create optimal conditions for the protection of a work of art in a museum, it is infinitely more complexwhen it comes to monuments. Monuments are constantly exposed toenvironmental conditions and quite frequently adapted to meet new needs during their existence. Besides the assignment of a building canchange as well. In these circumstances, the question is not only how to maintain it, but also to define what to maintain. The restoration and conservation are tools that contribute to the preservation of amonument or a landscape for the future.

By 1959, the Amsterdam-based jeweller had succeeded in bringing together several hundred objects from all over Europe, with the main focus being on jewellery.
