Nature, creativity and production in the Art nouveau architecture of Rijeka
The Art Nouveau decorations and equipment inspired by nature in the area of residential and public construction in Rijeka is moving, especially from the models of Vienna, from figurative motifs of flora and fauna to geometric forms. Architectural plastics inspired with the coastal vegetation such as chestnut and oak leaves, tendrils of vines, twigs of laurel, geranium and of climbing garden roses makes Art Nouveau buildings of Rijeka distinctive and recognizable, and, in addition to balconies and loggias, the most appropriate embodies of the authentic genius loci. What characteristic facades of Rijeka’s Art Nouveau architecture sets in a negative context is the craft concept of understanding of applied art. Reliance, namely, on the widespread and well-coordinated network of specialized industries and crafts which the architects could use for cement pads, tiles, glass doors and carved woodwork, gradually resulting in clichés. Because of that many industrialists and traders who lived and worked at that time in Rijeka prefered to order labels and decoration works in Vienna and Budapest, and that caused the frequent appeals to the public to entrust such works to skilled local craftsmen. In addition to these general facts which prevailing, there are some valuable works, such as solutions of Emilio Ambrosini, Venceslao Celligoi, Giuseppe Farcas, and other planners, which includes careful elaboration of facade decoration, railings and marquee of wrought iron, which testifies the artistic achievements of Gesamtkunstwerk in Rijeka. Trades School, First parquet factory of Rijeka, then local craftsmen in metal and stonemasons, whose services were using engineers of Rijeka, contributed to the overall success of these tasks. Such individually successful solutions with the motifs of local flora resulted in the production of facade applications, woodwork and wrought iron in small series derived in the local industry and crafts, as evidenced by many architectural examples in Rijeka.
