Guidebook - Secessional Architecture of Rijeka (Croatia)

Rijeka was for a long time a very important port and industrial town, but from 2000 its production diminished. Now the city is trying to convert itself into a touristic centre with emphasis on local historical and architectural values. Within the city territory, the main criteria regarding the selection of buildings and their inclusion into the guide framework are determined by the need to show to the citizens and tourists the existing Secessional buildings within the longer or shorter walk through the city centre. The buildings are chosen because of their importance, complete shape, composition of volume, the manner in which the interior space was constituted and because of the typical elements of the façade ornamentation suggesting the Secession decorative nature in its outer morphological configuration. The historical criterion embraces the early 20th century, i.e. the first two decades including also proto-rationalist architecture which announced more recent modern styles(1900-1925). During this period, Rijeka was ruled by Budapest governor while the architects were educated either in Budapest or in Vienna, so the architecture of Rijeka demonstrates a specific shape under various European influences of Secession style.

Looking at Klimt in a whole new light: a groundbreaking monograph
The countless events being held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth make a clear statement to the enduring appreciation for the work of Gustav Klimt. Not that it takes such a special occasion for the press and the public to start talking about Klimt. More than two hundred articles about the artist appeared online in August 2011 alone, in comparison with barely seventy on Rembrandt within the same period. This media publicity set editor Tobias G. Natter thinking about the value of compiling the present book. During his lifetime, Klimt was a controversial star whose works made passions run high; he stood for Modernism but he also embodied tradition. His pictures polarized and divided the art-loving world. Journalists and general public alike were split over the question: For or against Klimt?
The present publication therefore places particular emphasis upon the voices of Klimt’s contemporaries via a series of essays examining reactions to his work throughout his career. Subjects range from Klimt’s portrayal of women to his adoption of landscape painting in the second half of his life. The cliché that Gustav Klimt was a man of few words who rarely put pen to paper is vehemently dispelled: no less than 179 letters, cards, writings and other documents are included in this monograph. This wealth of archival material, assembled here for the first time on such a scale, represents a major contribution to Klimt scholarship.

Tobias G. Natter studied art history and history at the universities of Innsbruck, Munich, and Vienna. He worked at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna for fifteen years. From 2001–2002 he was curator of the Neue Galerie in New York. From 2006 to 2011 he directed the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz and was responsible for the museum’s new premises and the reorganization of the collection. Since October 2011 he has been the director of the Leopold Museum in Vienna. His extensive publications and his conception and organization of exhibitions on the theme of “Vienna around 1900” have made him an internationally acknowledged expert on Viennese art at the turn of the century.

Gustav Klimt: The Magic of Line

The phenomenal draftsman Gustav Klimt occupies a unique place in modern art. His extant œuvre comprises some 250 paintings and more than 4,000 works on paper. The study of the human figure—above all female—lies at the heart of the artist's activity as a draftsman, which he practiced assiduously.Through his study of the poses and gestures of his models, Klimt repeatedly examined the essence of particular psychological and existential states of being. In his constant quest for the ideal solution, Klimt often went beyond the preparation of his paintings, which, particularly after 1900, were dominated by the themes of Eros, Love, Life, and Death. His art cannot be understood without carefully considering the drawings, which are characterized by an unsurpassed mastery of line, in all the phases of his artistic development—from Historicism, through Stilkunst around 1900, the Golden Period, and up to his freer late work.
This lavishly illustrated publication accompanies the exhibition organized by the Albertina Museum in Vienna (March 13 to June 10, 2012) and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles (July 3 to September 23, 2012) to mark the 150th anniversary of Gustav Klimt's birth. In both venues, the emphasis will be placed on showing not only the variety of his draftsmanship, but also the centrality of drawing to Klimt's artistic enterprise. Most of the works on display will come from the Albertina's outstanding collection, one of the most extensive and representative groups of Klimt drawings in the world, complemented by select Austrian and international loans.
Marian Bisanz-Prakken is curator at the Albertina Museum, Vienna, and the reigning expert on Klimt drawings. She has published many books and articles on the subject.

Henri Rivière, entre impressionnisme et japonisme

Dessinateur ayant débuté dans la revue du Chat noir, Henri Rivière fut aussi l'un des metteurs en scène du Théâtre d'ombres. Aquarelliste de talent, il s'est imposé dans l'histoire de l'estampe par sa passion de la couleur.
Rivière participa activement au renouveau de la gravure sur bois en adoptant la technique japonaise de l’impression en couleurs et donna à la lithographie en couleurs une importance proportionnelle aux dimensions murales de ses réalisations.
En marge des courants de son époque, il puise son inspiration dans les paysages de Bretagne où il séjourne régulièrement et dans les estampes japonaises qu'il collectionne.
L'exposition présente une sélection d'aquarelles, eaux-fortes, gravures sur bois et lithographies qui témoignent de l'amplitude des recherches de l'artiste et de son goût pour les effets changeants de lumière qui imprègnent l'ensemble de son œuvre. Les carnets de croquis et dessins préparatoires, les matrices (bois et zincs gravés) et tirages d'état de certaines estampes ont le mérite de décomposer les étapes du travail de l'artiste.

Henry de Groux 1866-1930, Journal

Outre le texte très complet de Rodolphe Rapetti déjà citée, deux essais introduisent le volume : Pierre Pïnchon et Pierre Wat abordent Henry de Groux écrivain, entre « le sublime et le grotesque », permettant de mieux comprendre le personnage, son génie, ses excès, sa situation dans cette fin-de-siècle « décadente », entre Huysmans et Zola, Bloy et Tailhade : de Groux, peintre lettré et dévoreur de livres, solitaire sociable et associal (ou inversement), aristocrate baudelairien avec ce plaisir délectable qu’il y a à déplaire. Plus rapidement, le même Pierre Pinchon et Thomas Schlesser définissent le Journal lui-même, document multiforme à l’utilisation complexe et problématique, « précieuse source archivistique pour l’histoire du mouvement symboliste ».

Henry van de Velde gehörte zu den erfolgreichsten Designern und Architekten des 20. Jahrhunderts und war ein Wegbereiter für das Bauhaus. Henry van de Velde in Polen

In dem rund hundert Kilometer südöstlich von Frankfurt an der Oder gelegenen Ort Trzebiechow/Trebschen wurde 2002 ein vergessenes innenarchitektonisches Werk des belgischen Jugendstilarchitekten Henry van de Velde wiederentdeckt. In einem 1903 bis 1905 errichteten Sanatorium hatte van de Velde verschiedene Räume ausgestattet.
Der mit Briefen, historischen Aufnahmen und erstmals abgedruckten Dokumenten angereicherte Fotoband des Deutschen Kulturforums östliches Europa stellt als erste Veröffentlichung überhaupt das einzige Werk van de Veldes im heutigen Polen vor.
