The Ixelles Ponds, from town house to apartment building - ARAU
Dates:13.10.2013-13.10.2013
As the twentieth century progressed, the inhabitants of Brussels progressively lost their attachment to individual houses and began to enjoy the apartment lifestyle, encouraged by the 1924 co-ownership law and the social upheavals of the time. This change has had a profound effect on the city, its architecture and lifestyles. The Ixelles Ponds district offers a remarkable panorama of some of the best twentieth-century buildings in Brussels, from Art nouveau via Art Deco to Modernism. EN - length: 2.30 hours - 10 euros

The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction
Dates:04.02.2012-30.09.2013
The First Moderns is the first in a series of displays of spectacular displays of works from the Sainsbury Centre’s permanent collections that will explore the importance of design, particularly in the European context in the 19th and 20th centuries. Treating Art Nouveau as the first modern design movement, The First Moderns explores the progression of the style from natural to more abstract, geometric forms. Drawing on the Sainsbury Centre's permanent collections, The First Moderns highlights the role of artists and designers of the art nouveau style in the rise of modernism. The display offers an opportunity to see the Centre's Anderson Collection of Art Nouveau in a new way, comparing the naturalistic vitality of René Lalique’s jewellery, and glass by Emile Gallé, with the controlled style of Louis Majorelle and the geometric forms of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Josef Hoffmann. The display places the movement within its historical context, engaging with late 19th and 20th-century philosophical debates and reflecting the influence of science and nature on design, as a precursor to abstraction. The First Moderns features loans from public institutions such as the V&A and Glasgow School of Art, and a number of private collections. It is also a first chance to see acquisitions to the Sainsbury Centre collections of significant works by Josef Hoffmann and Alphonse Mucha. The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction is curated by a team led by Professor Paul Greenhalgh. Admission is free. The Charlier museum and Victor Horta
Dates:01.01.2050-01.01.2999
In 1890, the patron of the arts Henri Van Cutsem (1839-1904) inherited a townhouse in the neoclassical style at 16 avenue des Arts in Sint-Josse-ten-Noode, a borough neighbouring the historical city centre of Brussels. To show off his art collections to best effect, Van Cutsem entrusted the works to extend his home and convert the stables and annexes to a young and as yet unknown architect: Victor Horta. Between 1890 and 1893 the latter designed two galleries topped with glass roofs with metal supports and a new facade giving onto rue de la Charité. This enlarged Hôtel Charlier provides an early example of the innovations that would later become distinctive of the work of the master of Art Nouveau: the fluidity and transparency of the interior spaces, the use and affirmation of visible metal in a private home, fruit at the base of walls to lend an organic illusion, etc. In 1928, the townhouse became known as the "Charlier Museum" in memory of the sculptor Guillaume Charlier (1854-1925), Van Cutsem's universal legatee, who donated the house and its art collections to the borough of Sint-Josse-ten-Noorde. In 1993 the museum was listed as a historical monument by the Brussels-Capital Region. 64 pages, 13 X 13 cm, 180 gramme

Taverns that tell the splendours of Art nouveau and Art Deco… - Bus Bavard
Dates:26.10.2013-26.10.2013
"The pre war Brussels pubs offer a wide variety of atmospheres and many of them have kept their Art nouveau or Art Deco decoration. The stained glass windows, elegant curved woodwork, precious fabrics, mirrors and shining counters are still witnesses of the Belle Époque, the Roaring Twenties & Jazzy Thirties. They also tell about the evolution of the trends and tastes: from the well-lit, big & noisy brasseries of the turn of the century to the more discreet, cosy and intimate bars of the interwar period. Shall we visit them together ? Including two drinks." EN - by feet - 9 euros

Strasbourg 1900 - Carrefour des arts nouveaux
Dates:01.01.2050-01.01.2999

Slovenska secesija - (Slovenian Secession)
Dates:01.01.2050-01.01.2999
Discuss Slovenian Secession is the first comprehensive and integrated picture of the art of the Slovenian. Author sheds light on specific creative designs that connect art and literary creativity since the turn of the century until the First World War, and the inventive display makers clearly confirms that the arts could not divide, but through their interrelations reveals a single, albeit highly expressive structured spiritual atmosphere . The essential novelty of the text lies in the subtle disclosure of the spiritual atmosphere which is largely characterized by flashes of secession. Creative expansion of this groundbreaking service is the author perceives as so important that it even compares with creative enthusiasm at the birth of the European Renaissance, this is Art Nouveau attributed much bigger and wider importance, as we recognize it yet.
