Around 1914: Design in a New Age
Dates:24.7.2014-31.3.2015
European Galleries, Level 3 One hundred years ago, the ROM opened its doors to the public. Europe was plunged into the Great War. This cataclysmic world event marked the end of a social-political system that had existed for centuries and signalled the birth of the modern movement. It changed the way people looked at their lives and viewed their future. Around 1914: Design in a New Age, explores a pivotal period of innovation and experimentation as artists struggled to reconcile quality design with the emergence of mass production, and the new materials made available with technology. With works by key designers of this era including: Christopher Dresser, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Archibald Knox, Charles Robert Ashbee, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright, Emile Gallé, Edward Colonna, Taxile Doat, Louis Majorelle, Carlo Bugatti, Galileo Chini, Chris van der Hoef, Georg Jensen, Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, Gustave Siegel Josef Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens, Max Laeuger, Richard Riemerschmid, and Walter Gropius.

Rossetti's Obsession Images of Jane Morris
Dates:4.10.2014-4.1.2015
Jane Morris (née Burden) was the wife of William Morris, and the favoured model of Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In his maturity Rossetti drew and painted Jane with an obsessional intensity and she was cast in many literary and mythological roles, including Dante's Beatrice, Pandora, Proserpine and Astarte. Whether in direct or symbolic guise, Jane's features are depicted with a sombre intensity that offer a glimpse into Rossetti's troubled soul. The exhibition, marking the centenary of Jane's death, brings together compelling and rarely seen drawings and pastel studies of Jane by Rossetti. The exhibition also features images of Jane as herself and explores her life and interests beyond modelling. Jane Morris (1839-1914) was a talented embroiderer, linguist and musician and played a role in the family business Morris & Co. The recent publication of her letters (The Collected Letters of Jane Morris, edited by Jan Marsh and Frank C. Sharp, 2012), gives an unparalleled insight into her interests and personality, balancing the sullen and silent impression that Rossetti's paintings have immortalised. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was the leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His depictions of Jane ensured that her face became the iconic image of Pre-Raphaelite womanhood. A touring exhibition in partnership with Bradford Museums and Galleries. The exhibition is kindly supported by Farrow & Ball, Islington. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am - 5pm; free

Art Nouveau à Bruxelles: De l'architecture à l'ornementalisme
Dates:1.1.2050-1.1.2999
Wolfsburg
Oskar Kokoschka. Humanist and Rebel
Dates:26.4.2014-17.8.2014
The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is celebrating its 20th birthday. The new building opened its doors in 1994 with a major survey exhibition dedicated to the French artist Fernand Léger entitled The Rhythm of Modern Life. 1911–1924. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg will now mark its 20th anniversary with a show devoted to the portraiture of another great classic modern artist, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980). Circa 55 paintings, 138 works on paper and numerous documents demonstrate the evolution of Kokoschka’s artistic talents based on portrait painting. The exhibition’s eleven chapters examine his early Viennese period (works for the Wiener Werkstätten and the Kunstschau), the Berlin years from 1910 to 1916 (the collaboration with Herwarth Walden and his contributions for “Der Sturm”) and his time in Dresden from 1916 to 1923. The exhibition will focus in particular on Alma Mahler and Kokoschka’s proximity to music, on his portraits of children, allegorical women’s portraits, political allegories, animal pictures and especially his self-portraiture. The golden thread running through this exhibition is Kokoschka’s own person: the people he knew and his view of humanity and society. Kokoschka’s portraits of persons and animals embody the essence of his outlook on the world. The show consequently presents a unique personal perspective of the 20th century and its significant events. Kokoschka evolved a style that suddenly also seems very contemporary. An exhibition in collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.

Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites
Dates:30.7.2014-30.7.2014
Stephen Wildman, Director of the Ruskin Library at Lancaster University, has recently produced an edition of Ruskin’s writing about the Pre-Raphaelites. In this talk he will look at Ruskin’s close involvement with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, from his public support for the early paintings of Holman Hunt and Millais to his patronage of Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal and in later years his lasting friendship with Edward Burne-Jones. Through his series of pamphlets entitled Academy Notes, Ruskin was instrumental in the huge success of Pre-Raphaelitism during the 1850s, always commending artists who based their work on a close observation of nature, but he also admired (and purchased) the imaginative Dantesque watercolours of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Hunt’s Light of the World he regarded as one of the greatest sacred paintings of all time, while it was in contrast with Burne-Jones’s exhibits at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 that he famously took issue with Whistler.
