Le Val Saint Lambert c'est cela: 180 ans d'un savoir-faire maîtrisé avec audace et un cristal parmi les plus purs de toute la planète. Le génie technique des cristalleries mais aussi la créativité de ses artisans ont bâti la réputation internationale du Val Saint Lambert.
Créée en 1826, la manufacture allait rapidement s'imposer sur toutes les routes vouées au commerce qui ont traversé le XIXe siècle: des palais des maharadjahs aux wagons de l'Orient-Express en passant par les tables d'apparat de la haute société belge et européenne, le cristal liégeois s'imposa comme une évidence.
Aujourd'hui, riche de ses racines et de sa créativité, le Val Saint Lambert poursuit son essor et continue d'imposer sa signature. Ce sont les étapes majeures de son développement, les lignes de forces de son expression artistique (Art Nouveau et Art Déco)que ce livre, riche de pièces inédites, a pour objet de vous faire découvrir.
La cristallerie, fournisseur breveté de la Cour de Belgique, est l'une des étapes prestigieuses du circuit de tourisme "La route du feu".

The squares district or the zenith of Art nouveau - ARAU

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Maelbeek valley offered a unique setting for the development of a new residential district. Its squares, water features, fountains and tree-lined avenues attracted wealthy middle-class residents who commissioned the most talented architects of the period to design their homes. The district became a veritable laboratory of late nineteenth-century architecture, with facades in a wide variety of styles, from unfettered Eclecticism to Art nouveau, then at its zenith.

This change has had a profound effect on the city, its architecture and lifestyles. The Ixelles Ponds district offers a remarkable panorama of some of the best twentieth-century buildings in Brussels, from Art nouveau via Art Deco to Modernism.

The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction

The First Moderns is the first in a series of displays of spectacular displays of works from the Sainsbury Centre’s permanent collections that will explore the importance of design, particularly in the European context in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Treating Art Nouveau as the first modern design movement, The First Moderns explores the progression of the style from natural to more abstract, geometric forms.
Drawing on the Sainsbury Centre's permanent collections, The First Moderns highlights the role of artists and designers of the art nouveau style in the rise of modernism. The display offers an opportunity to see the Centre's Anderson Collection of Art Nouveau in a new way, comparing the naturalistic vitality of René Lalique’s jewellery, and glass by Emile Gallé, with the controlled style of Louis Majorelle and the geometric forms of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Josef Hoffmann.
The display places the movement within its historical context, engaging with late 19th and 20th-century philosophical debates and reflecting the influence of science and nature on design, as a precursor to abstraction.
The First Moderns features loans from public institutions such as the V&A and Glasgow School of Art, and a number of private collections. It is also a first chance to see acquisitions to the Sainsbury Centre collections of significant works by Josef Hoffmann and Alphonse Mucha.
The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction is curated by a team led by Professor Paul Greenhalgh.
