Treasures from Korea: Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392–1910
Dates:2.11.2014-11.1.2015
This sweeping panorama celebrates the artistic achievements of the Joseon dynasty, a line of 27 monarchs who ruled the Korean peninsula for more than 500 years and left a substantial legacy for modern Korea. Treasures from Korea: Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392–1910 is the first full-scale American exhibition to be devoted to the dynasty’s art. Comprised of more than 150 works drawn primarily from the National Museum of Korea’s collection, Treasures from Korea offers a rare opportunity to see some of Korea’s artistic masterpieces, including a number designated as national treasures. The exhibition is organized around five key themes that illuminate the artistic accomplishments and dynamics of Korean cultural life under the world’s longest-ruling Confucian dynasty. The works on view demonstrate the breadth and scope of the fascinating art created during the Joseon dynasty. The objects range from the courtly arts of ceremonial screen painting and calligraphy to scenes that vividly depict life across the social classes. Also included are outstanding examples of Korean ceramics, ritual wares, metalwork, sculpture, lacquer, furniture, costumes, textiles, photographs, and illustrated books.

Treasures from Korea: Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-1910
Dates:29.6.2014-28.9.2014
Treasures of Korea presents more than 150 works from the time of the world's longest-ruling Confucian dynasty, lasting more than 500 years. On display are many Korean national treasures that have never before been shown in the United States. This comprehensive survey is organized around five key themes that together illuminate a period that continues to influence modern manners, norms and social attitudes: the role of the king and his royal court and their taste for simplicity, expressed in porcelain objects; the strict hierarchies that defined class and gender; the production of metal and ceramic ritual implements used in ancestral worship; various religions practiced during this time, and the late influence of western civilizations.

TOWARD THE LIGHT The Artists’ Colony Exhibition of 1914
Dates:17.5.2014-14.9.2014
The anniversary exhibition to Artists’ Colony Exhibition of 1914 at the Mathildenhöhe (on the day exactly 100 years after this last historic Great Exhibition after the ones in 1901, 1904 and 1908 - presents with works by Albin Müller, Bernhard Hoetger, Elizabeth Duncan, Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens, Emanuel Josef Margold, Arnold Mendelssohn and Heinrich Jobst the whole spectrum of creative work from architecture and painting to sculpture and applied arts to music and dance. Historical documents and works of art highlight the importance of this exhibition before the great war. To bring alive the spirit of the Artists’ Colony Exhibition of 1914, the Künstlerkolonie Museum (Artists' Colony Museum) presents both paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewelry and photographs from the Municipal Art Collection of Darmstadt as well as valuable loans from public and private collections. They bear witness to the unbroken optimism of modernity, which ruled in the Darmstadt Artists' Colony until the outbreak of the First World War and which is still noticeable on the Mathildenhöhe. Curator of the exhibition: Dr. Philipp Gutbrod, collection curator and curator, Institute Mathildenhöhe

Theo Colenbrander (1841-1930)
Dates:22.3.2014-28.9.2014
Dutch design avant-la-lettre Theo Colenbrander is not just considered the first industrial designer in the Netherlands, his work is specifically innovative as well. In his day, only a select group appreciated the bright colours and nearly abstract patterns of his ceramics and his textile designs. In many ways, Colenbrander was ahead of his time, which makes his work still up-to-date. In 2014 the Drents Museum will organise a major retrospective on Theo Colenbrander. Never before has his work been shown in such volume and diversity: from ceramics to illustrations, from architecture to tapestries. The museum also exhibits work by Colenbrander’s contemporaries, in order to show whether or not Colenbrander was ahead of them. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication in the series ‘Monografieën van het Drents Museum over kunstenaars uit het tijdperk rond 1900’ (monographs by the Drents Museum on artists around the turn of the last century), written by guest curator Arno Weltens and published by WBooks, Zwolle.

The Sources of Modern Architecture and Design
Dates:1.1.2050-1.1.2999
The turn of the nineteenth century saw an extraordinary flowering of invention in architecture and design, with two contrasting styles emerging - Art Nouveau and the International Style. Professor Pevsner brings a new clarity to an often confusing period, tracing - with the aid of nearly two hundred carefully chosen illustrations - the origins of twentieth-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.
