Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palace at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art

The Austrian Museum of Applied Art / Contemporary Art (MAK) is dedicating a special exhibit to Gustav Klimt's design drawings for the mosaic in the dining hall of Stoclet Palace.

The entire Stoclet Palace in Brussels is considered a work of Art Nouveau and was designed largely by Josef Hoffmann and Gustav Klimt. Klimt's nine design drawings for the mosaic with the familiar themes of "Expectation", "Fulfillment" and the "Tree of Life" were created in 1910/11. After several years of restoration work, they are now on display at the MAK. Gustav Klimt had a rough concept for how the frieze should look in detail when he began his work. Changes to his design drawings in 1:1 scale gradually gave form to the famous work of art we know today. With numerous instructions, he presented the Vienna Workshop and the Vienna Mosaic Workshop with his precise vision of the frieze.

The exhibit "Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palace" attempts to reproduce Klimt's style of work. Documents authored by Klimt while he was working on the piece or that he wrote about it are placed into context with the final work and what can be seen in the frieze designs. As an accompaniment to the documentation of the newest research results and the restoration, the Stoclet family is profiled as a customer of the Vienna Workshops.

Klimt. The Wien Museum Collection at the Wien Museum - from 16 May to 7 October 2012

The Wien Museum owns an exceptional Klimt collection, which will go on public display in its entirety for the first time in an exhibition entitled "Klimt. ­The Wien Museum Collection".

With around 400 drawings, the Wien Museum has the world's largest collection of Klimt sketches, including preparatory sketches for his best-known masterpieces, as well as studies from all phases of his lifetime work. All the drawings on display are arranged by subject matter (e.g. Secession, studies for the faculty paintings, erotic sketches), giving visitors the possibility to explore all aspects of each theme.
A number of paintings will be on show alongside the sketches, including the most important work of art in the Wien Museum, the "Portrait of Emilie Flöge", which was completed in 1902. The work is one of Klimt's most famous paintings and the first portrait of a female subject to feature ornamental detailing in the foreground. This heralded the dawn of a new creative period in the artist's life.
A number of the pictures completed during this time have sold for record prices at international auctions in recent years. Other exhibits include various posters and printed materials that Klimt designed for the Secession (in many cases the collection has both the originals and the prints), the artist's gown, his death mask, original prints of portrait photographs, busts and a cast of his right hand. Another highlight is Egon Schiele's drawing of the deceased Gustav Klimt.

Exhibition Against Klimt. "Nuda Veritas" and her defender Hermann Bahr at the Austrian Theater Museum in Vienna - from 10 May to 26 November 2012

Gustav Klimt’s famous and rarely exhibited painting "Nuda Veritas", created in 1899, was bequeathed to the Austrian Theater Museum as part of the estate of the Austrian author, dramatist, and theater and literary critic Hermann Bahr (1863–1934). 

The Friedrich Schiller quotation inscribed above "The Naked Truth" is a statement advocating an uncompromising artistic truthfulness, which encapsulates the ethos of the Secession movement. As a close friend of the artist, Bahr had been able to acquired the "Nuda Veritas" at a discounted price. The picture represents the fraught relationships between art, critics, and the general public.
Hermann Bahr played a decisive role in publicizing the Secessionist movement from the outset. In 1902 he responded to the storm of controversy surrounding Klimt's works, and in particular the scandal over the faculty pictures, with his book "Against Klimt", a collection of writings vilifying Klimt and the art world in general.
The exhibition at the Austrian Theater Museum examines the following questions: What inspires Klimt to create his allegories? Which artistic and li­te­rary traditions come together in the different elements of this striking image? The exhibition aims to demonstrate how the outrage, criticism and enthusiasm that greeted the Avant Garde movement in Vienna around 1900 set the tone for how the early modernist works were received. It also aims to show how enlightening these controversies can be for our present times.

Exhibition 150 years of Gustav Klimt at Upper Belvedere in Vienna - from 13 July 2013 to 6 January 2013

The exhibition "Masterpieces in Focus: 150 years of Gustav Klimt" in the Upper Belvedere is a very special presentation of the museum's entire stock of Klimt's paintings. 

The Belvedere owns the world's largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, including the world-famous painting "The Kiss". However, the exhibition "150 years of Gustav Klimt" is not intended to deal with relationships concerning style or the history of art. Rather, it is intended to be about Klimt's work itself, about the statement that every single one of his main works - whether "Fritza Riedler" or "Judith I", for example - can convey to the observer. In addition, the show discusses every single year of Klimt's lifetime. Another focal point therefore lies on the as yet little considered history of how Klimt and his works were received. Over the course of 150 years, Klimt has become a phenomenon in terms of not only art science, but also history. Also to be seen are the two Klimt masterpieces "Sunflower" and "Family", which the Belvedere acquired in March 2012 from the estate of art collector Peter Parzer.

In 1893 the patron Nicolaus Dumba ordered Gustav Klimt to arrange the music salon of his residence at Parkring. Klimt was brilliant as a decorator and creator of the Overdoor painting Schubert on the piano (1899) and the Music (1898) and became according to Hermann Bahrs's opinion the creator of "the most beautiful paintings, that an Austrian painted".

Restoration of the Art Nouveau Center's staircase in Ålesund

The staircase at the Art Nouveau Center has been restored this spring and is now appearing in its original look from 1907. Thorough research has been made to reveal and identify what seem to be the original colors on walls and staircase. The wainscoting on the walls, the window sills and the doors has all been treated with graining; an old and unique paint technique made to imitate different types of wood - pine on the wainscoting and mahogany on the window sills and the doors. Mounted on the walls are replicas of original art nouveau style wall sconces. The hardware for the doors is representative for the period, even though not specific art nouveau in its style, but rather what might have been available in this area at the time when every single house owner should build new houses after the great city fire. The Project has been granted by Vestenfjeldske Bykreditt.

Fantastic! Rudolf Kalvach at the Leopold Museum - 7 June to 10 September 2012

Vienna and Trieste around 1900

The Leopold Museum’s summer exhibition will show the first comprehensive presentation of the expressive oeuvre of Rudolf Kalvach (1883-1932), an artist whose works are situated at the point of intersection between Jugendstil and Expressionism. The retrospective traces the career of this highly talented artist, whose biography is closely linked with the era of »Vienna 1900« and the early works of the Expressionists Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) and Egon Schiele (1890-1918).

Call for papers for the international colloquium "Art Nouveau and Asia" in Nice 

26 to 28 September 2013

Organized by the FEDERPAC program of the IrASIA and Aix-Marseille University with the collaboration of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network and the Nice University.

Researchers who want to present a paper during the colloquium are invited to send a short CV and a ten lines proposition, bilingual French-English, to the organisation committee before the end of September 2012.

The Horta Museum in Brussels awarded by the Museum Prize 2012

The jury saluted the "coherency and the attention with which the Museum defends and restores Horta's heritage for more than twenty years now". According to it, "in the light of all the accomplished realisations for so many years, the Horta Museum can be considered as an example to follow for lots of other museum institutions".

Mackintosh at the Grand in Glasgow

Jean Prouvé, an ironworker in Nancy
