Budapest
Lechner, A Creative Genius

In 2014 the Museum commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Ödön Lechner (1845–1914), one of the greatest Hungarian architects and one of the original geniuses of the European architectural scene at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. To mark this anniversary, the Institute of Art History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest are jointly organizing an international conference and an exhibition.

This exhibition presents the whole scope of the work of the architect Ödön Lechner. Special attention is paid to five major works, nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site status: the Kecskemét City Hall, the parish church of Budapest-Kőbánya, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Institute of Geology, and the Postal Savings Bank. Visitors can familiarise themselves with these through the architect’s original plans and drawings, as well as period and modern photographs. Working drawings of the ornaments so crucial to Lechner’s work, the publications which inspired him, and examples of the Zsolnay ceramic in which they were realized are also presented. One of the rooms evokes the world of the Japan Coffee House, Lechner’s second home, another acommodates a panoramic movie of his major works.

Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900

From the birth of Danish painting through the famous Golden Age of Danish art to the dawn of Modernism. The major features of Danish and Nordic art over 150 years are unfolded in a display that features both an historic overview and special themes of immediate relevance to contempoary life, while also focusing on artists of particular importance. At the same time, this display casts light on some of the more overlooked chapters in the history of Danish art.

White nights. Carel de Neree tot babberich, Henri van Booven and Louis Couperus

Around 1900, writer Henri van Booven (1877-1964) befriended the artist Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880-1964). The latter worked in the style of Aubrey Beardsley, while Van Booven would become Louis Couperus' first biographer. He got to know the writer's work thanks to his friend De Nerée. The author introduced the artist to the work of Aubrey Beardsley. Both admired Louis Couperus, especially the novel Extasy (1892). For the first time in one hundred years a series of drawings which De Nerée made for this novel which will be on show together. The exhibition also features documents and books from Van Booven's private archive and library.

The exhbition is put together by Sander Bink, specialist on the Dutch Fin-de Siècle. To the occasion of this show the beautifully illustrated book Carel de Nerée tot Babberich en Henri van Booven. Den Haag in het fin de siècle will presented at the vernissage (published by WBOOKS, Apeldoorn, together with the Louis Couperus Museum).

Hans Christiansen - The retrospective

Retrospective on the complete works of the artist colony member of the first hour: With Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) is an as versatile as exemplary Jugendstil artists to rediscover, who found his vocation in Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt.

Hans Christiansen is one of the most important representatives of Jugendstil, especially with his drafts in the field of arts and crafts. In Paris where matured into an artist, he was appointed in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in Darmstadt, where he was among the first seven members of the artists' colony. On the Mathildenhöhe he blossomed and excelled as a genuine work of art enthusiasts in painting, architecture and applied art as well as a designer of lights festivals. For the first time the full range of this versatile artist is presented: The retrospective presents his house on the Mathildenhöhe, room facilities, glass pane, jewellery, posters, paintings, drawings, textile art and ceramics in different spatial ensembles - including previously unknown like his fashion and poster designs from the 1920s.

The major retrospective, the first ever to Hans Christiansen, will be seen in four German institutions. The kick-off will make Mathildenhöhe as the first step, and then will follow the Bröhan Museum in Berlin, the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich and the Museumsberg in Flensburg, where the exhibition tour will end just before the 150th anniversary of the artist in his hometown.

An exhibition of the Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt Institute and of the Museumsberg in Flensburg in collaboration with the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich and the Bröhan Museum in Berlin.

The exhibition will then travel to the Musée Bröhan, Berlin (19 Feburary– 24 May 2015), the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich (18 June – 20 September 2015) and to the Museumsberg Flensburg (11 October – 17 January 2016)

The work of Philip Webb

This lecture is being offered as a contribution to the centenary of the death of Philip Webb (1831-1915), architect of William Morris’s Red House, the National Trust’s Standen, and a whole group of quietly influential houses. He had one important Scottish client, the owners of the Arisaig Estate, and in the North of England he was responsible for major works for the family of the industrialist, Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell, around Northallerton, and for George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, painter and collector as well as landowner, for whom he did work on the Naworth Castle and Castle Howard estates. Above all, however, he partnered William Morris in the founding of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and, while Morris acted as the spokesman, Webb worked out how to repair old buildings reliably and with as little damage to their authenticity as possible.

Dr. Peter Burman is an architectural historian who has been studying Webb for many years, organised the only conference ever held on Webb and his work, and has produced two major articles on him with more in preparation. He sees Webb as a understated but nevertheless major figure both in the early development of the British Arts & Crafts Movement and in the early history of a responsible British ‘heritage movement’. He is a Guardian of the SPAB and in Scotland he is currently chairman of the Falkland Stewardship Trust, whose responsibilities include a major 19th century country house, and a trustee and Archivist of Hopetoun House. He acts as an arts and heritage consultant across a spectrum of special places.

This is part of the Gilded Glasgow Project.

Glasgow's Gilded Age 1864-1914: Glamour & Grit Conference

The conference will highlight those Glasgow designers who originally established the city's reputation at the time of the Aesthetic Movement and Mark Twain’s so called Gilded Age. Glasgow’s international reputation for design and manufacture sprang forth from the city's industries, as well as its educational institutions, and its influence spread across the globe through trade. This laid the foundation for Glasgow’s inimitable ‘style’.

We want to invite our guests on a unique sensory experience, considering both the glamour and the grit of industrial Glasgow. Our speakers will be discussing a wide range of topics, including; the interiors of Glasgow’s finest buildings, architectural ornament and stained glass within the city, and the movers and shakers of both the artistic and industrial spheres.

Prof. John Hume OBE, BSc ARCST, Hon FRIAS, FSA Scot; Chairman of the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments, Patron of GCHT, and life-long supporter of Glasgow’s industrial and artistic heritage, will be speaking about the industries and the individuals who produced or commissioned art in Glasgow throughout the period.

Other speakers include Dr. David Mitchell MSC IHBC ProfICME FSA Scot, Director of Conservation and Trustee of the Scottish Ironwork Foundation, Dr. Robyne Erica Calvert, Mackintosh Research Fellow for the Glasgow School of Art and Max Donnelly, Curator of 19th-Century Furniture at the V&A Museum.

We believe that it is crucial to the promotion of Glasgow as a world city, and that through it we will be celebrating its vibrant artistic and industrial history, encouraging academic study of the period of this ‘gilded age’, and promoting Glasgow as a place for cultural and historic tourism.

Interested in ironwork conservation and the history of the industry in Scotland, particularly Walter Macfarlane and Co.

Dr. Robyne Erica Calvert: Robyne is a researcher in the visual culture of the 19th-21st centuries, with a particular focus on Charles Rennie and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. She holds a PhD in Art History and an MLitt in Decorative Arts & Design History from the University of Glasgow; and an MA in Art History from the University of Oregon.

Max Donnelly: Max Donnelly FSA is Curator of Nineteenth-Century Furniture at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He has lectured and broadcast on aspects of nineteenth-century design, including for the BBC2 series The Genius of Design (2010). A contributor to several scholarly journals, his article on Vincent van Gogh and Daniel Cottier was published in The Burlington Magazine (September 2011).

Ian Gow: Ian Gow was appointed Curator of the National Trust for Scotland in 1998. He had previously been Curator of Architectural Collections at the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. He is the author of several books and many articles on the decorative arts and architecture of Scotland.
