5th
Art Nouveau Festival in Bad Nauheim - from 10th to 19th September
2010
Monument protection, handcraft, and a travel in the past back to
1900.
Let´s participate in the 5th “Jugendstilfestival” in Bad Nauheim
from 10th to 19th September! Go back to the time when the tsarina
Alexandra came to Bad Nauheim 100 years ago. Music, expositions,
food, clothes make you live an incredible time travel in our city.
Exactly 100 years ago the russian tsarina Alexandra came to Bad
Nauheim to go for a course of treatment in a spa for 6 weeks, in the
new modern styled installations of Bad Nauheim. Since “Alix” was not
only accompanied by members of her family, but also by the whole
royal suite, her visit turned into a worldwide media-related event.
This attraction is the central point of this year`s Art Nouveau
Festival. The slogan “The prosperity time of the Modern style, the
visit of the family of the czarin 100 years ago” attracts a lot of
concerts, expositions, conferences and visits, partly in Russian.
The festival takes place in the largest connected construction of
art nouveau in Europe: the Sprudelhof and the Trinkkuranlage in Bad
Nauheim.
From the 11th to the 12th September more than 60 selected artists
expose the large manual repertoire from the art nouveau time on the
market of restaurators and artisans. The visitors can also look at
the restaurators and notice with such professional care how the
wallpaper, the furniture and the illustration accurately maintained
and repaired are. Works of marble, mosaic and glass are produced in
an incredible way and extraordinary unique jewellery creations can
be bought.

Opening
of the renovated Urbanc department store
The renovation of the art nouveau department store in Ljubljana, the
Urbanc house will be finished at the end of September to host the
Emporium fashion store.
The department store was built in 1903 by Felix Urbanc,
distinguished Ljubljana tradesman with manufactured textile on the
Prešeren square. The plans were commissioned to Friedrich Sigmundt,
renowned Austrian architect from Graz, who designed the building in
a French art nouveau style on the model of french department stores
of the late 19th century.
Unveiling
of the monument to Ivan Hribar
On the 30th of august new monument to Ivan Hribar, mayor of
Ljubljana (1896-1910), the work of the sculptor Mirsad Begić, was
unveiled on the quay of Ljubljanica river. Hribar was meritorious
for the renovation of Ljubljana after the great earthquake in 1895
in art nouveau style.
Exhibitions
On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the death of Charles
Van der Stappen (1843-1910) the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of
Belgium organize a documentary exhibition in order to present the
multiple facets of this sculptor’s work. In 1875, Van der Stappen
became well known and managed to link the study of the antiques and
Italian Quattrocento with the dominant naturalism. He mainly owed
his reputation to his monuments and ornamental façade sculptures.
Produced in an eclectic style, those works have to be situated
between Realism and Art Nouveau. As a teacher and director at the
Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, he gained reputation by his
innovative approach of arts teaching. He developed, in co-operation
with Constantin Meunier, the sculpture programme for the Botanic
Garden of Brussels and he co-operated with Victor Horta in the
domain of the Art Nouveau decorative arts. Due to his fondness for
the contemporary literature, his studio became a popular meeting
point for artists from different fields. We invite you to discover a
selection of his drawings, preparatory sketches, projects, and
archive documents.

"Art Nouveau and Secession - Joseph Maria Olbrich" at the
Leopold Museum in Vienna - from 18 June 2010 to 27 September 2010
In the summer of 2010, the Leopold Museum joins with
Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt to mount the most comprehensive
exhibition to date on the work of Joseph Maria Olbrich
(1867-1908). This large-scale retrospective presents around 300
individual works by this architect and universal artist, thereby
putting Olbrich's work into the aesthetic context of Viennese
Modernism. The works on loan from public and private collections in
Germany and Austria include furniture, textiles, drawings and
watercolors.
"Wallpapers.
Collection of the Museu de les Arts Decoratives and of the Gabinet
de les Arts Gràfiques de Barcelona" at the
Disseny Hub Barcelona - from 7 July to 31 October 2010
This fourth study gallery scheduled by Disseny Hub Barcelona, which
can be viewed admission free at DHUB Montcada, features a selection
of wallpapers from the collections of the Museu de les Arts
Decoratives and the Gabinet de les Arts Gràfiques. The exhibits are
both local and international and range from the mid-20th century to
the latest trends.
This study gallery is divided into two parts. The first deals with
current wallpaper and the interesting contributions of technological
advances which have influenced design, production and aesthetics.
The second part is devoted to historical wallpaper and includes the
traditional typologies — standard papers, wainscots, borders,
friezes or ceiling panels — and also the most representative styles
from the 19th and 20th centuries, ranging from Neoclassic to the
1970s revival.
Exhibition
: "Henry van de Velde and Art Nouveau in bookbinding in Belgium"
at the
Wittockiana Library - from 5 October 2010 to 15
January 2011
In Belgium, Art Nouveau style is characterized by the curved and
moving linework as well as a style always more stressed, floral
ornaments going from the figure to the line. The bookbinding circle
was mainly impressed by the strong personality of the architect-designer Henry van de
Velde (1863-1957) who designed between 1893 and 1900 about twenty
decorations for bookbindings dedicated to his own library or to some
other persons close to the Belgian royal family. Not only did he
create the decorations, but he also designed the gilding irons that
his personal bookbinder from Brussels, Paul
Claessens, had made in the Béarel workshop in Paris.
"Jewelry
by artist. From Modernisme to the early avant-garde"
at the
National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC) - from 26 October
2010 to 13 February 2011
The exhibition will reveal how major artists at the forefront of
creative trends in the fertile 20th century --both Catalans and
their international counterparts, from Modernisme to the first
historic avant-garde movements --approached the world of jewellery.
The exhibition will expose the least-known facets of Auguste Rodin,
Hector Guimard, Alphonse Mucha, Josep Hoffmann, Josep Llimona,
Koloman Moser, Serrurier-Bovy, Henry Van de Velde, Manolo Hugué,
Paco Durrio, Xavier Nogués, Pau Gargallo, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy,
Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder,
Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand, Hans Arp, Giorgio de Chirico, Man
Ray, Pablo Picasso, Julio González, Henri Laurens and Alberto
Giacometti, as well as many others.
The works on show come from public institutions and museums all over
the world, as well as from private collections and from the MNAC's
own collection. In particular, the exhibition will include works
from different museums all over the world, including the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney
Museum of American Art, in New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum,
in London; the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Musée d'Orsay and the
Musée Rodin, in Paris; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía,
in Madrid; the Institut d'Art Modern (IVAM), in Valencia, and the
Museo de Bellas Artes, in Bilbao, amongst many others, and from
numerous private collections in Europe and America.
"Paul Nicolas (1875-1952). Itinéraire d'un verrier lorrain" at the
Musée
de l'Ecole de Nancy -
from
6 November 2010 to 13 February 2011
Paul Nicolas' route began at the heart of Nancy's Art Nouveau. Hired by Gallé in
1893, he acquired a solid experience and founded his own glassware from 1919.
Far from merely repeting an old-fashioned style, the glassmaker used his
technical knowledge to create high quality non-figurative pieces.
Numerous graphic documents illustrate the gifts of designer Paul Nicolas and his
passion for botanics that stood out at Gallé's. A set of glass held in public or
private collections, demonstrates techniques and formal research conducted
throughout his career by the artist, at Gallé's side, then within the "Gathered
Writers" under the name "D 'Argental "with the factory of Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche,
or under the signature "Paul Nicolas".
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue designed in collaboration with the
Nicolas family.
"The Age of Symbolism in Latvia" - from 10 June to 19 September 2010
at the
City Hall of Bruxelles
At the end of the 19th century, the Latvian symbolist painters
fought for a strong wind of modernism to blow in Riga. This wind of
modernism already had the visual arts in Europe in its ban.
Velvety impressions, gray-white landscapes and strange and
mysterious scenes: a selection of some 50 works including wonderful
paintings, etchings and drawings of Rozentãls, Purvitis and Walter.
Presentation
of the
Jugendstilverein at the Sprudelhof until 4 October 2010
Two photographic exhibitions are on show in the thermal complex
(Bath n°4). The first one, by Hiltrud Hoelzinger, combines the
Sprudelhof Art Nouveau heritage with naked bodies (in black and
white) and the second by Hendrik Hoelzinger proposes color
photographs of the Sprudelhof in a more surrealistic style, for
example with animals. The DVD "Jugendstilbad Bad Nauheim"
is screened and two original bath cells demonstrate the ancient
tradition of thermal culture.
Publications
"Émile
Gallé : l'amour de l'art - Les écrits artistiques du maître de l’Art nouveau" at
Place Stanislas publishing house
Emile Galle is - if not the master of Art Nouveau - at least one of its major
artists. After decades of neglect, his works are now widely recognized and his
artistic ideas were recorded by him in numerous writings (articles, letters,
forewords, records show ...).
In 1908, four years after his death, his widow wrote a first selection of his
texts under the title "Writing for Art" (reprinted in this volume). In The Art
of Love, François Le Tacon has assembled all Gallé's writings related to art,
supplemented by descriptions of important masterpieces by Gallé himself (Table
Flore de Lorraine, Way to Fall, Field of Blood, for example) and the description
of many pieces held by exceptional collectors as Robert de Montesquiou.
All these texts and descriptions are illustrated with color reproductions of
works by Gallé (works, drawings, sketches ...). The publication of Gallé's texts
gathered under the title "L'Amour de l'Art", is organized around six thematic
sections : Considerations on Art, Art and Industry, The School of Nancy,
Ceramics, Glass, Wood.
Edition established and annotated by François Le Tacon. Format 20 x 26 cm. 360
pages in color, with approximately 100 reproductions of works. Hardback bound,
color coated with dust jacket.

"Charles
Rennie Mackintosh" by James Macaulay at
W.W. Norton & Company Ltd publishing house
A new book charting the Life and Work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh has been
published. Written by James Macaulay, a former senior lecturer at the Mackintosh
School of Architecture, it contains both historic photographs and modern images
of his major works by the noted architectural photographer Mark Fiennes, this is
an essential and beautiful addition to the Mackintosh canon and to architectural
history. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was Scotland’s greatest architect and
arguably one of the world’s most admired. He had far fewer commissions than his
contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright but with a few bold and innovative
structures—the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House among them—he had a profound
influence on art and architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. Like
Wright, Mackintosh designed in totality, down to the furniture and fabrics used
in his structures, and he was influenced by the Japanese, particularly in the
simplicity of his designs and themes from nature.
Hailed as a pioneer of modernism, Mackintosh was, however, perhaps truer to the
Arts and Crafts movement than has been realised.

Buildings and places related to the circle of life - such as
maternities, hospitals, schools, training institutes, churches,
psychiatric clinics, sanatoriums, cemeteries, etc.- are especially
interesting cultural goods : as public buildings, they are noted by
their quality, from the urban planning point of view as well as
architecture, and are located in strategic places in cities and
sites. Moreover, they witness the way central questions of life are
dealt with : birth, joys, pain and death. In the framework of this
topic, guided tours will be organized at the crematorium and
slaughterhouse of La Chaux-de-Fonds.

anniversary of the Art Nouveau Theatre in Bad Nauheim - 8 May 2010
The theatre was constructed by the Sprudelhof architect Wilhelm Jost
and decorated by the artists of Mathildenhoehe Darmstadt. The
Kurhaus was bombed during the second world war, moreover, a fire
destroyed the theatre in 1980. However, the theatre was restored in
the 1980ies so that it today appears almost like the original
building: with columns, arcades and scultures of musicians outside
and inside with wrought iron banisters of the stairs, beautiful
lamps in the foyer and precious ones in the theatre, paintings on
the ceiling, around the stage and the balconies. The foyer is today
decorated with original paintings of the artist Wilhelm Kleukens.
Today, the theatre hosts preformances such as concerts, shows and
theatre. The anniversary is organised by the building owner,
US-hotel group Dolce.

"La fantastique architecture d'Alban Chambon" in Brussels
There are many ways to be an architect and to make architecture…
First as a worker, then an industrial artist, turned out in the
Parisian design companies in the 1860s, Alban Chambon became a
talented supervisor, staggering under orders in Brussels, London,
Amsterdam, Vienna, Paris and Ostend a few years later. In Paris, the
Ranelagh Theatre, the only remaining element of a large property and
in Brussels, the now listed living-rooms of the Metropole Hotel show
his abounding talent. This book traces the rise and fall of this man
who was not born or educated in his time to invent a new
architecture, and yet did it, strangely indeed, but with gusto, on
the fringe, by winning performance as the architect of light show
and magic, music hall, by creating a universe as a space of fantasy
with the malice of a Jules Verne, a Georges Melies or a Max Linder.
Jean-Paul Midant teaches history at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure
d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes
de Chaillot in the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris.

Lighthouse building in Glasgow - from 14 November 2009 to 28
February 2010.
Commissioned in the context of Scotland's
developing cultural links with Catalonia and marking the centenary
of Mackintosh building at the Glasgow School of Art, the exhibition
and associated publication are a personal response to Modernisme and
how the architecture now sits within the context of 21st century
Barcelona. The project documents work by Antoni Gaudi i Cornet along
with buildings by Lluis Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i
Cadafalch.
Brussel-Capital
Region gives a planning permission for the restoration and
renovation of the Palace in Brussels
Built by the architect Paul Hamesse in 1913, the
cinematographic theatre "Pathé Palace" was an avant-garde place as
brasserie, concert hall and cinema altogether. The plans of this
masterpiece of Paul Hankar's student included a brasserie, a
restaurant, concert hall, cinema and even a winter garden to fully
express the geometrical Art nouveau of the time.
Closed in the 70 with the decline of cinema, the
building has been reallocated several times without success in the
2000 years before being bought by the French Community who now
wishes to have it renovated into a cinema-bar-exhibition place. The
opening of the new palace should take place in 2012.
Apollo
cinema endangered in Tbilisi
The most significant monuments of Georgian Art
Nouveau are movie theatres. The arrival and then spreading of Art
Nouveau architecture and cinema took place simultaneously and the
coincidental success of these two innovations has been very
important in Georgia. A good example of this is cinema “Apollo”, an
Art Nouveau movie theatre built in 1909. Today it is in serious
technical condition and is not functioning anymore. The movie
theatre “Palace”, built in Tbilisi in 1914, is not operational today
either. In the middle of the 20th century, Art Nouveau style movie
theatres “Mon Plaisir” in Kutaisi and “Apollo” in Batumi were
destroyed, therefore in Georgia the cinema "Apollo" is the only Art
nouveau movie theatre preserved in its original form. Apollo would
now need to be properly restorated to become a movie theatre again.

publication by the
Ecole de Nancy Museum
Art Nouveau knows a great development at the
Ecole de Nancy, funded by Emile Gallé and gathering major artists,
such as Louis Majorelle, Victor Prouvé, Jacques Gruber, Eugène
Vallin or the Daum brothers.
Furniture, ceramics, glass, stained-glass windows,
book binding, textiles... All techniques related to decorative arts
participate to a production inspired by the nature of shaped and
entirely new designs.
Created in 1900, the Ecole de Nancy Museum
gathers exceptional works, mostly thanks to the generosity of
artists and their descendants, but also of sponsors such as Eugène
Corbin who gave his collection to the City of Nancy in 1935. This
book presents a wide selection of works, sometimes unique and
symbolizing the great creative feature of Nancy in the 1900 years.

Biennial
Art nouveau festival in Brussels from 3 to 25 October, 2009
The fifth Biennial Art nouveau event in Brussels will examine the
theme of "From Art nouveau to Art Deco" and offers a unique
opportunity to visit more that fifty interiors of buildings in
Brussels during the first four weekends of October 2009. The
association "Voir et Dire Bruxelles" hopes that the decision to
extend the theme of this year's Biennial event to include Art Deco
will enable the public to discover some of the city's architectural
gems from the inter-war years, many of which remain relatively
unknown... The event will stress the architectural variety of these
two major styles in Brussels. While many splendid private mansions
will again be opened to the public, there will also be access to
schools, industrial buildings, public buildings, more modest houses,
hotels and shops... this diversity of building types demonstrates
the richness of the Art nouveau and Art Deco styles as used in the
Brussels cityscape. The guided tours will enable members of the
public to understand how these buldings have been preserved,
inhabited and sometimes completely changed, while remaining
remarkable witnesses to this priceless heritage.

Exhibition
dedicated to the listed buildings of the city of Ålesund at the
Jugendstilsenteret
The reconstruction of the town centre of Ålesund after the town fire
of 1904 gave the town a remarkably homogenous architecture: a
striking, local interpretation of Art Nouveau concentrated in a
limited area. The town’s architecture is of high artistic,
architectural and cultural historic value. That is why, over the
period 1985-2003, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage chose to
list a total of ten Art Nouveau buildings in Ålesund.

Exhibition
"The Cauchie House and the poster-facade" at the Archive of Modern
Architecture in Brussels - from 22 June to 25 October 2009
From summer 2009, an exhibition will focus on the "poster-facade"
topic around the Cauchie House, undeniable masterpiece of Art
Nouveau in Brussels. "poster-facade" means a facade expressing a
cultural, philosophical, commercial message…, independant from the
building behind, such as the newspaper La Dépêche du Midi by Léon
Jaussely in Toulouse or, more recently, Le Monde in Paris. In
Brussels, the facade of the Cauchie House is the most striking
example of poster-facade; it here expresses the desire to draw the
attention of passer-bys and invite to know more about the art of the
owner, an artist- designer who specialized in architectural
sgraffito. The exhibition will compare the Cauchie House facade to
other facades in Europe. Exhibition organized by the Archive of
Modern Architecture in association with the Cauchie House
Association.

Opening
of the Art Nouveau Museum in Aveiro, Portugal - late June
2009
The restoration work of the Residence Major Pessoa in Aveiro
has just come to an end. Built in 1909, the Casa Major Pessoa is one
of the most remarkable Art Nouveau buildings in the city of Aveiro,
a town that is especially well known in Portugal for its
representative of this artistic style. This house was private
property until recent years and when it became vacant its decay
process began, favored by enclosure and lack of maintenance. Lately
bought by the City, the building is now entirely restored and
converted in an Art Nouveau Museum.

On Emir Kir's initiative as the Regional State Secretary for
Monuments and Sites, Brussels government started in early February a
procedure to list the famous café "Le Cirio" located in the rue de
la Bourse, in Brussels. "Le Cirio" is part of a block of facades
from the architect Charles Gys (1883-1886) and is called after his
foundator Francesco Cirio, an Italian businessman who created the
tinned food industry and launched a chain of tasting rooms all over
Europe. "Le Cirio", Brussels branch, is the only one still existing
today ; its three interior rooms are fully preserved, including
various café furniture elements (counter, wall seats, stools, etc.)
and decorations made of wallpapers, panellings, wrought iron
chandeliers, mirrors, etc., inspired from neo-Renaissance or Art

- folder - Restoration of a Finot and Muller stoneware vase in Nancy - from 22
October 2008 to 22 February 2009
The Musée Ecole de Nancy keeps 4 vases decorated with vine and wheat
patterns, created by Nancean sculptor Alfred Finot and made by the
factory Muller in Ivry-sur-Seine. After being displayed a long time
in the museum garden, those works were in a worrying state and had
to be studied and restorated. One of them, restorated by Hortense de
Corneillan, specialized in the arts of fire, will be the heart of an
exhibition - folder explaining the long and fascinating
investigation made about these vases, the various searches related
to the restoration and its steps.
Three
schools from the architect Henri Jacobs listed in Bruxelles-Brussel
The government from the Region Bruxelles-Capitale decided to list
the more remarkable elements (photo: detail of a wall frieze) of
three schools from Henri Jacobs, the most well-known representative
of school architecture in the region of Brussels.
Henri Jacobs is probably the most famous of the second generation of
Art Nouveau architects, i.e. architects who contributed, after
Victor Horta, Paul Hankar and Henri Van de Velde – Art Nouveau great
masters – to spread the style in the region of Brussels. Henri
Jacobs designed private houses and low-rent housing, but he is
especially famous for his school buildings. Besides some of them
have already been listed: the school located on the rue des Capucins
in Brussels, the school of the rue Rodenbach in Forest, or the
famous school complex of the rue de la Ruche in Schaerbeek.
The
city of Aveiro presents an educational CD-Rom to initiate children

characteristics are all tackled in a playful way accessible to the
young public (children and youngsters).
Simultaneously, a space dedicated to teachers presents various texts
and suggestions of activities to organise at school or during a

Week in La Habana - November 7th to 14th, 2008
The Belgian week planned in La Habana's historical centre, aims to
shed light on the bonds between the two countries Cuba and Belgium.
The main theme that will be dealt with during the week of the third
edition is "Material and immaterial heritage". The "material
heritage" part will focus on Art Nouveau architecture, around which
various events will be organised during this week :
Exhibition on Art Nouveau in Brussels in parallel with Art Nouveau
in La Habana - November 7th to 15th in the Galeria del
Convento San Francisco de Asis, third floor
Exhibition "Undiscovered Portrait of Art Nouveau in Brussels":
the photographer Serge Brison gives his view of the Art Nouveau
heritage and by making its undiscovered portrait, explores barely
tackled facets and insists on the present life of this heritage.
Bruxelles' exhibition is a selection of 30 photographs out of
3.000 taken all over Europe.
A view of La Habana's Art Nouveau: even though the Art Nouveau
heritage of La Habana can seem discreet, it is not acknowledged as
it should be. Selecting and displaying isolated elements helps
discovering and revealing the Art Nouveau spirit by distinguishing
details from the whole. A glance on stony details on the façades of "Catalan modernisme"
of La Habana shows how precise are the ironworks,
a tour of different Art Nouveau interiors, to observe the rich
production of mosaiques, the architectural treatment displayed on
the facades and approaching the artistic graphical affluence allow
to present an undeniable presence of Art Nouveau. An essence present
- therefore to discover - in the city and in memory (coordination : Orlando Inclan, oficina del
Historiador).
Conference on Schuiten and Peeters' experience at the Autrique House -
November 10th at 10.30 a.m, Public Library
Ruben Martinez Villena, Plaza de Armas : the experience of restoring
the Autrique House, first work of the architect
Victor Horta, shows many common points with the restoration approach
promoted by the Oficina del Historiador of the City of La
Habana and therefore the cultural use attributed to the building. Those similarities can be used as exchanges and identify similar
processes as those used in the Autrique House.
Comic strips and architectural heritage - from November 10th to

An Art Nouveau section in the renovated rooms dedicated to European
ceramics in the
Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire, in Bruxelles-Brussel
The first section of renovated rooms dedicated to European ceramics
had lately already opened, where you can discover objects from the
XVth to the XIXth century, ending spectacularly with the famous
ceramics collection of Delft. The second part, dedicated to the XXth
century production, has been accessible since last summer. The
public can admire Art Nouveau ceramics, especially a pretty
important collection of Willy Finch's works. The Art Déco style will
also be illustrated by the famous vases designed by Charles Catteau
for Boch Keramis. Most of them come from a collection acquired by
the Foundation Roi Baudouin before being put into storage at the
Musée du Cinquantenaire. After-war and contemporary times are also
represented through decorative or utilitarian works from Pierre
Caille, Roger Somville, Carmen Dionyse, Piet Stockmans, Tjok
Dessauvage, Mieke Everaet and many more.
In Darmstadt, exhibition "Russia 1900: Art and culture in the Empire of the Last
Tsar" - October 12, 2008 - February 1st, 2009
Symbolism, national Romanticism and Neo-Primitivism – Russian art at
the threshold of the 20th century presents itself in various
facettes. The art scene of that period was characterised by the
tension between a leaning towards West European Modernism and the
search for a specifically “Russian” style derived from its own
cultural roots: thus ideas based on folklore, fairy tales and
enjoyment of colour became characteristic hallmarks of Russian art
around 1900.
A special emphasis in the exhibition lies on the Jugendstil in
Russia. It is thus treading new ground, for until now painting,
graphic art, architecture, arts and crafts, and design influenced by
this style have never been shown in these quantities. The exhibition
not only brings together exquisite works of art from the most
important museums in Russia, but also provides insights into the
programmes and reality of the artists’ associations, studios and
factories that were setting the agenda.

Extension
of the Exhibition
on the architect and applied arts artist Endre Toroczkai Wigand
(1869-1945) in Godollo, Hungary, from February 9th to November,
2008
Since 1900, when Academic Architecture,
Innendakoration and Magyar Iparművészet published some works of Ede
Toroczkai Wigand, his name and interiors attained renown in Europe.
Owing to The Studio and its Yearbooks, Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration,
he became a foreign representative of British (plank) style,
although it was his architecture that was reported from time to
time. It was declared the equivalent of Baillie Scott's in Hungary.
The reason for this qualification was his special composition of
interior spaces. His architecture possesses a seemingly striking
twofold character: modern and vernacular. In both cases, his
composition of different kinds of spaces (as those of Victor Horta,
Antoní Gaudí, and Frank Lloyd Wright) meant an alternative in
architecture during the era of Historicism and Eclecticism, as well
as in engineering. His initiative was to compose spaces instead of
repeating them or copying historical spatial structures, and to
construct large halls. Due to the singular basic method of the two
stylistic paths of Wigand's architecture, the sources of the
vernacular and the modern are one and the same.
A new publication about the work of Henry van de Velde in Poland
In Trzebiechow, since the Second World War a small city in Poland
and before the German city of Trebschen, a sensational artistic
devise was discovered: Henry van de Velde, the famous Belgian
designer of Art Nouveau, created the interieur of a sanatorium there
between 1903 and 1905.
Apart from essays on topics of artistic and historical interest as
well as on the story of recovering the work of van de Velde, the
German-Polish publication contains many actual photos, historic
illustrations, letters and other documents published for the first
time. For what is known by now, the sanatorium's interieur
represents the single opus of van de Velde in Poland.
In
Brussels, the Saint-Cyr House soon renovated
Listed in 1988 and bought in 2006 by the estate company Movast, the
Art Nouveau house is now being renovated with the support of the
Department of Monuments & Sites of the Region Brussels-Capital,
which participated to the front façade restoration costs up to
380.000 €.
The Saint-Cyr house was built between 1900 and 1903 according to the
plans of the architect Gustave Strauven, Victor Horta's student.
This house is a good example of architectural feat, for the
architect took advantage of a very narrow piece of land located in a
bourgeois quarter of North-East Brussels to create a frenzied high
masterpiece, which originated what will be called later "flamboyant
Art Nouveau". On top of two balconies, the last level is made up of
an almost circular loggia topped with a wrought iron element made by
Charles Van Waeyenberghe. The underside of the balconies is
decorated with sgraffitos and the shapes of the window frames are
inspired from the flora world. Finally the richness of the railings,
made of extravagant lines of ironwork, is predominant in the
architecture, overgrowing as creeping ivy.
The
exhibition catalogue "Victor Prouvé (1858-1943)" now available
This book publication complements the exhibition dedicated to Victor
Prouvé in the three museums of the City of Nancy in 2008 and
displays all the disciplines he worked in until the first world war:
painting, fundamental and continuous aspect of Prouvé's work,
together with sculptures, drawings, engravings and photographies ;
decorative arts, which he was one of the most fervent defenders
within the Ecole de Nancy movement ; the multiple image, to which
the artist devoted his attention during his whole carrier.
Around 300 works, from some never exhibited, belonging to the
Nancean collections, to the ones from Parisian great institutions
(Petit Palais, Musée d'Orsay, Musée des Arts et Métiers, Musée des
Arts décoratifs and the Bibliothèque nationale de France), or kept
in private and family collections, make an exceptional corpus,
revealing a great artist from the early XXth century.
This catalogue is the first substantial book published in the late
fifty years ; it gathers contributions from specialists of each
discipline and recall Victor Prouvé's carrier.

Exhibition
Victor Prouvé - The Ecole de Nancy years, May 16th - September 20th,
2008 in Nancy
As a versatile artist, Victor Prouvé probably was
the most complete Nancean originator of arts renovation around 1900.
Painter, sculptor, and drawer all at a time, he was also a precious co-worker
for Gallé, Majorelle and Vallin ; he took an interest in photography,
poster, jewelry, textile and leather, and took over from Emile Gallé
as President of the Ecole de Nancy. From now, only few aspects of his
numerous talents had been touched on in exhibitions or publications.
The 150th anniversary of his birth gives the opportunity to extol the
artist's multiple talents, one of which being a fertile creator
believing in l'Art dans Tout (Art in Everything). Three
exhibitions, conceived as one event, wil be presented from Mai to
September 2008 in the museums of Nancy and will bring a rich and
renewed view of Prouvé's work, with previously unexhibited pieces:
The exhibition catalogue will gather contributions of specialists of
each discipline (art historians, museum curators) and will deal with
the whole career of Victor Prouvé. It will be the first content book
published about the artist in the last fifty years.

A study day will be dedicated to Victor Prouvé's work and personality

the Museum's presentation of its complete of posters by
Toulouse-Lautrec. In addition, the remarkable collection of
fin-de-siècle selected works from a legacy of Brussels patron of the
arts, Octave Maus. The entire exhibition is testimony to the
artistic creativity of Belgians during the lavish period in art
history. A delight for all.
Publication
of "Wiener Werkstätte Jewelry", edited by Hatje Cantz Verlag on
behalf of Neue Galerie New York
This publication accompanies the first major museum exhibition devoted
exclusively to Wiener Werkstätte jewelry. It highlights masterpieces
created by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Carl Otto Czeschka, and
Dagobert Peche, among others. Supplemental materials include design
drawings, as well as historic photographs of prominent clients
wearing Wiener Werkstätte jewelry. There is a particular emphasis on
fashion designer Emilie Flöge, confidante of Gustav Klimt, who
assembled a large collection of Wiener Werkstätte jewelry. The
central essay by Neue Galerie assistant curator Janis Staggs
examines hte founding of the Wiener Werkstätte, the development of
its working program, the role of key designers and patrons, and the
legacy of this unique firm. The Wiener Werkstätte, of Vienna
Workshops, was established in 1903. The firm's artistic co-founders-Josef
Hoffmann and Koloman Moser-subscribed to the English Arts and Crafts
ideal of exceptionally well-made objects designed by artists and
executed by specialized craftsmen. Pieces of jewelry were among the
first objects produced by the firm, and proved to be its crowning
achievement. In these spectacular objects, Hoffmann and his peers
realized the aesthetic goal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of
art, in which design and craftsmanship are at their peak.

Two
Art Nouveau houses preserved in Bruxelles-Brussel
The government of the Region Bruxelles-Capitale definitely listed the
main parts of an Art Nouveau house in Uccle (rue des Carmélites,
177). The house was built in 1903 by Alphonse Boelens. The beauty,
originality and modernity of the facade contrasts with the street
line of traditional houses of eclectic styles, and its interior
woodworks confirm the Art Nouveau style of the house.
On the other hand, a listing procedure started for a whole building in
Schaerbeek (rue André Van Hasselt, 32) and for the facade the roof
of the neighbouring building (rue Van Hasselt, 34). Built in 1900 by
Gaspard Devalck, the building is a perfect illustration of the young
architect's mastery and taste for decorative elements. Crowned with
a wooden sculpted cornice, the facade is especially illuminated:
stained-glass windows, sgraffiti and ironworks decorate the house.
These Ces classements s'inscrivent dans la continuité de la campagne
de protection des témoins les plus importants de la production de la
seconde génération de l'Art nouveau.
The
brasserie "La Porteuse d'Eau" soon restorated in Bruxelles-Brussel
The facade of the brasserie will soon be restorated thanks to a
regional contribution of 80%. The house listed from 1988 now hosts
the Brasserie « La Porteuse d'Eau », a very well known place amongst
Brussels' inhabitants. The house was built by the architect and
contractor Ernest Blérot. It belongs to the architectural quarter of
the street Vanderschrick, a unique area in Bruxelles-Brussel. The
building gives off a true harmony despite the architectural variety
and dynamic wanted by the architect.

Exhibition "Plecnik Project" Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de
Bruxelles, du 14 mai au 20 août 2008
On the occasion of its EU Presidency, Slovenia presents one od its
greatestt minds whom expert circles worldwide recognized as an
outstanding artist quite some time ago. The architect Joze Plecnik
(1872-1957) began his professional career in the joiner's workshop
of his father in Ljubljana, then worked in Vienna (with Otto Wagner)
and in Prague. His architecture ranks as an outstanding example of
critical regionalism and is one of the rare competent alternatives
to uniformism of the so-called International Style. Quiet and modest
in life, Plecnik was rediscovered posthumously and won international
recognition with the great retrospective exhibition at the Centre G.
Pompidou in Paris in 1986. The exhibition was prepared by the
architect Boris Podrecca, who has also organized the current
presentation in Brussels. It shows a representative overview of
Plecnik's oeuvre, with the emphasis on his works for the capital of
Slovenia.

In Bruxelles-Brussel, classification of the whole Hôtel Winssinger
built by Victor Horta
Following an idea mooted by the State secretary Emir Kir, Brussels
government decided to classify the whole Hôtel Winssinger in the
town of Saint-Gilles. This Art nouveau mansion was built between
1894 and 1897 by Victor Horta for the engineer Camille Winssinger.
This building is amongst the first great architectural works by the
master of Art nouveau, the Hôtel Tassel, his manifesto work, being
built in 1893.
A foundation for the Art Nouveau complex of “Sprudelhof” in Bad
Nauheim
The long discussion on the future of the Art Nouveau complex of
“Sprudelhof” had a positive issue. The county of Hessen no longer
searches a private investor to take over the Art Nouveau heritage
and build a spa centre. The movement led by five groups of
volunteers - including Jugendstilverein - turned out to be
effective. In April 2007, a human chain of more than 1,300 persons
was organized between the spa complex and the townhall of Bad
Nauheim. A parcel with solutions to renovate the Art Nouveau complex
and thousands of signatures were submitted to the mayor. The protest
against the idea of a private investor and the request to create a
foundation were heard. In December 2007,
the Prime Minister of the county of Hessen and the mayor of Bad Nauheim
signed a resolution: the county of Hessen will invest around 50 millions
euros in the restoration of the spa complex. The
signature of the constitution act is now in progress. The Jugendstilverein
wishes and hopes that cultural institutions such as a "Jugendstilzentrum"
will be realized as mentioned during workshops.

Publication
of the book Le Bruxelles de Horta by Ludion Editions
In this fascinating book, you will discover all the buildings and
monuments built in Brussels by the architect Victor Horta, pioneer of
Art Nouveau in Belgium: from the Matyn house, still in a classic
style, to the Palais des Beaux-Arts, more geometrical, through the
exuberant Hôtel Solvay. The text was written by Françoise Aubry,
curator of the Horta Museum and undisputed authority in her
field. This new book dedicated to Victor Horta, which plunges the
reader into the atmosphere of the late 19th century, is remarkably
illustrated with archives images and photographs from Christine Bastin
and Jacques Evrard. Besides it also includes city maps and useful
information that will help you to plan your Art Nouveau walk through

The city of La Chaux-de-Fonds applied to the UNESCO
It is not by chance if Chaux-de-Fonds was, at the beginning of the XX
th century, the only Art Nouveau creation nest in Switzerland. This
city is indeed the result of a great industrial development in
watchmaking. Built by watchmakers for watchmaking, the city is a
remarkable witness of the industrial area. On December 21st, 2007,
Switzerland officially submitted a proposal to be listed in the World
Heritage for its whole urban cultural landscape. More info on

Publication of the exhibition catalogue "Building for a new
life" edited by Theiss
In September 2006, Bad Nauheim celebrated its Art Nouveau
heritage with the organization, amongst other events, of an exhibition on the
theme "Building for a new life-
Art Nouveau towns in Europe". This event was co-organized by the Jugendstilverein
Bad Nauheim and the Denkmalakademie Schloss Romrod (Academy of Listed Buildings
located in Romrod Castle). The exhibition catalogue is now available: "Bauen für ein neues
Leben" - Die Entstehung der Bad Nauheimer Jugendstilanlagen fotografiert

Exhibition "Album of a collector" of the
Cercle Guimard at the
Horta Museum in Bruxelles-Brussel, November 7, 2007 - January 13, 2008
In 1903, on the occasion of the first
Exhibition of the Dwelling in the Great Palace, Hector Guimard for
own account published a series of postcards. These showed, through a
selection of its achievements, the characteristics of its style and
its capacity to intention to the revival of architecture and
decorative arts. This iconography, often ignored or under-exploited,
was not always on the initiative of the architect, nevertheless its
name and its quality are very frequently mentioned and, thus, all
these stereotypes take part in the testimony of its work in the
time. The presentation of these images –xxx postcards, 1 leaflet,
and 3 invitation cards- aims at clarifying the advertising use that
the architect Hector Guimard, tried to develop with the postcard at
the beginning of the twentieth century. It was then a modern and not
very expensive means to diffuse images to illustrate a clear but
strange concept; “The Guimard Style”. Guimard renews the experiment
about 1910, with the real operation of the streets the Fountain,
Gros and Agar where he even succeeds in reproducing the plans of the
buildings on certain postcards. His last contribution to this type
of publicity is related to the Town hall of the French village of
the exhibition of decorative Arts of 1925. Guimard was not the only
architect to use this medium. He is nevertheless that one who
invested himself most personally. This explains why his work by far
is represented most in the French art nouveau architecture.

"Art Nouveau Diaspora" at the Jugendstilsenteret in Alesund, 10
november - 31 december 2007
Exhibition 'Vienne-Bruxelles' in Bruxelles-Brussel, 26 June - 23
December 2007
At the end of the XIXth century, an artistic movement was
born in Vienna that was to have a major impact. It was known as the
Secession. The key figures were the painter Gustav Klimt, the
decorator Koloman Moser and the architect Josef Hoffmann. This
exhibition seeks to recreate a little explored aspect of this
artistic adventure, that of the reciprocal influence exercised by
the two capitals around the focal points of the Stoclet Palace and
the gallery L'Intérieur, opened in 1906 on the rue de Namur
by Léon Sneyers, the most Viennese of Belgian architects. Among
other fascinating figures, the exhibition evokes that of the great
Parisian architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, nephew of the Stoclet
couple, who was inspired by their Brussels mansion house to create
his own language. Exhibition realized by the Modern Art Archives
with the support of the Brussels-Capital Region.

Exhibition "Art Nouveau - Bad Nauheim & Europa" at the
Goethe Institut in Bruxelles-Brussel, 6 november - 14 december 2007
By order of the "Spa-Directory of the Grand-Duchy of Hesse",
the court-photographer Ludwig Schmidt/Friedberg has documented the building of
the spa-area Bad Nauheim. Every step of this extensive urban development by the
architect Wilhelm Jost has been photographed : from the model, the demolition of
the old graduation houses and bathhouses to every phase of the construction from
the beginning until the completion. The quality of the photographs is
extraordinary from every point of view, artistic or craftswork.
The exhibition "Art Nouveau in Progress" will be
presented at the
Lodz Art Center from 3d to 25th November, 2007
Travelling exhibition of the Réseau Art Nouveau
Network. « Art Nouveau in Progress » is totally different from, and
complementary to, the great exhibitions which have so commendably
celebrated Art Nouveau in recent years. It explores the destiny of
the Art Nouveau heritage in the thirteen partner cities and brings
to light several examples of previously unseen projects. The
exhibition is set out in themed sections, offering a perspective of
an artistic and cultural movement that developed simultaneously in a
number of European cities. The exhibition’s originality lies in
genuinely new discoveries of city planning projects, architectural
creations and objets d’art.Indeed, apart from the five major works
chosen by the partners and illustrated in the introduction, the
exhibition presents works which have never previously been seen,
have now disappeared, have not been recognized or are undergoing
restoration. All are shown in the themed sections: vision,
disappearance, continuity and regeneration. The exhibition tour
therefore presents visitors with a history of the Art Nouveau
heritage, from the process of its creation to its current functions,
via the recollection of lost works. The exhibition has been
presented in turn in each of the thirteen European cities over a
period of about three years (has already been presented in Terrassa,
Bruxelles-Brussel, Provincia di Varese, Barcelona, Nancy, Alesund,
Glasgow, Helsinki, Riga, Praha, Budapest, Ljubljana, La
Chaux-de-Fonds). At each stage the exhibition is completed by a
local section, which focuses particularly on the distinctive
features of that city’s Art Nouveau heritage.

Unknown work by Henry van de Velde in
Westende, Belgium, 1 July 2006
In villa "Les Zéphyrs" in Westende-Bad
an Art Nouveau ensemble from 1898 recently was identified as the
work of Henry van de Velde's early period. The ensemble consists of
a wooden panel, two fixed buffets and a copper mantelpiece. Lieven
Daenens, director of the Design museum in Gent, identified the
objects after comparing with similar works of Van de Velde. The
identification was later confirmed by Antje Neumann, a researcher in
the project "Werkverzeichnis Henry van de Velde" in Weimar, Germany.
Villa ”Les Zéphyrs” was bought by the commune of Middelkerke in 1972
and is currently being restored and decorated as the 1930's holiday
house of Dr Muyshondt from Gent. The design of the villa dates back
to a concept from 1910 by the architect Oscar van de Voorde who
designed it for the world exhibition in Brussels 1910. The villa
will open to the public on 1st of July 2006.

Department recently published an inventory of Kruununhaka's
stairwells. They are an important part of Helsinki's cultural
heritage and offer valuable examples of well-preserved interior
spaces. Many of Kruununhaka's stairwells were designed by the most
outstanding architects of the time. As was the custom, stairwells
were used to convey a sense of impressiveness and elegance.
Fortunately a significant legacy of handicrafts has been preserved
in the stairwells' masonry vaults and decorative paintings.

Colours and shapes - the Ecole de
Nancy’s 18thC heritage – Exhibition at the Ecole de Nancy Museum :
16 September - 31 December 2005
This Exhibition has been organised
by the Ecole de Nancy Museum as part of the “Nancy 2005 - The Age of
Enlightenment” celebrations. While the city of Nancy took advantage
of the occasion to restore one of the most magnificent 18thC squares
in the world to mount a number of events presenting a vast panorama
of the Age of Enlightenment, the Ecole de Nancy Museum decided to
take a closer look at a particular, little discussed aspect of the
works by artists in the School: their 18thC heritage. It was the
18thC Place Stanislas, symbol of Nancy up to the creation of their
famous 1900s naturalist style, that originally inspired the objects
by Gallé, Daum, and others. Fully aware of their stylistic
influences, and of the risk of creating a mere pastiche that would
debase the work of the earlier period, the Nancy artists
nevertheless succeeded in finding a primary source of inspiration in
the 18thC, and using it to create an innovative, lively and
resolutely modern style.
