History of the Network

The network, a Brussels initiative

In 1999, following an initiative launched by the Brussels Region’s Department of Historic Sites and Monuments, a group of institutions from European cities with rich Art Nouveau heritage – from Helsinki to Barcelona and from Glasgow to Ljubljana decided to come together to form the first European cooperation network.

Protecting and promoting Europe’s Art Nouveau heritage

Organised as a non-profit association under Belgian law since 2007, the objectives of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network asbl are :

  • Research, conservation, and promotion of European and international Art Nouveau heritage
  • Establishment of active cooperation and exchange of experiences among the various European stakeholders involved in studying and safeguarding this heritage
  • Stimulating public interest and engaging supervisory authorities in this heritage, particularly aspects that are little known or at risk
  • Cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit and fostering commitment among professionals and the general public
  • Advocating for a rigorous scientific approach to the study and preservation of Art Nouveau
  • Acting as a conduit for information to a community of enthusiasts
