C’est grâce aux affiches publicitaires que l’artiste tchèque Alphonse Mucha accède à la notoriété à la fin du XIXe siècle, connaissant la véritable gloire en collaborant avec la « divine » Sarah Bernhardt à huit reprises, pour Gismonda ou encore La Dame aux camélias, et en étant exposé au Salon des Cent en 1897.

Affiches de spectacle, d’expositions ou de produits de consommation courante lui permettent d’afficher dans les rues de Paris un style très identifiable caractérisé par un ensemble de constantes graphiques : femme idéalisée aux cheveux virevoltants, motifs végétaux et floraux imprégnés d’Art nouveau, éléments d’inspiration symboliste mêlés à des compositions byzantines, tons pastel réhaussés d’or, de bronze et d’argent…

C’est la quintessence du style du « Prince de l’Art nouveau » que restitue cet ensemble de 22 planches détachables en couleur.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the world-famous company Thonet, the MAK invites visitors to take a journey through time and modern furniture design. The bentwood furniture developed by Michael Thonet made style history and served as the foundation of one of the world’s most successful furniture brands. At the end of the 1920s, Thonet also entered the tubular steel furniture business, which continues to be an important pillar of the company’s production to this day. A chronological overview of Thonet furniture is complemented for the first time by embedding the works in the technological, typological, aesthetic and historical development of furniture design. Complemented by loans from international collections, the book shows more than 300 exhibits, most of which were newly photographed.

The art of the early 1900’s was characterized by innovations and experiments. The era that includes movements such as Art Nouveau, Secession, Art Deco and Art Nouveau, has some of the most beautiful works of art produced with the design of the Heavenly Jerusalem, perhaps most notably in the field of religious art in the form of stained-glass windows, frescoes and carvings. These works are almost never in the major centers of the Art Nouveau – ie Brussels, Vienna, Prague or Paris – emerged, but aloof, often in small towns or in the countryside. Only a small number of works of art is documented or recorded scientifically, and so it was necessary to do research for this work to a much greater extent than usual for artists, history and material condition.

Katsushika Hokusai remains one of Japan’s most popular and influential artists. In this book, the historian Jaume Fabrega claims first modernism as the golden age of Catalan cuisine and what we ate and what ex escrow drank at that time both the artisans and workers as bourgeois or Indians wealthy, what could be purchased in grocery stores and menus which offered the most luxurious inns and restaurants of the moment. In the second part of the volume for an exhaustive compilation of recipes typical of the era, dishes that are the source of our taste memory.

This book, which accompanies a UK travelling exhibition Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty, draws on the latest research to examine the theoretical aspect of his work, especially the idea of beauty – the core principle of his art. It features Mucha’s iconic posters and other decorative works from his Paris period and also looks at how the artist expressed his Czech nationalism with his artistic language after his return to his native Czech lands.
