The eleventh World Art Nouveau Day will be dedicated to materials: glass, wood, iron, stone, and many others. After the second industrial revolution, new materials such as wrought iron and glass became available to craftsmen and architects. While industrial production continued and encouraged mass production, artists and architects throughout Europe continued to rely on craftsmen’s manual skills and creativity to shape their ideas using various materials. The use of these materials encouraged them to experiment with innovative decorative and constructive solutions of which Art Nouveau became the manifesto.
With the 2023 edition of the World Art Nouveau Day, the Network wants to highlight the materials, working techniques and different uses to provide the general public with a unique insight into the different facets of this style. In addition, this year’s theme is closely linked to the theme of our lecture series, which will focus on restoration.
Again this year, RANN is organising online activities up to 10 June:
- Photo contest: the sub-theme of the competition is materials used in architecture. The competition will have four categories: Stone, wood, wrought iron, and glass
- Quiz on the Instagram page and publication on Facebook
- Storytime: Objects between functionality and aesthetics
- Focus on restoration: how are Art Nouveau objects, houses and materials maintained today

Anniversary festival at the Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE
The Jugendstilsenteret is turning 20, and they are organizing an anniversary festival!
8–10 In June, they will fill the museum with extra activities, with professional additions, guided tours, city walks and workshops for the youngest.
The museum is open with exhibitions in all rooms! In addition to their permanent exhibition, visitors can experience the anniversary exhibition Owls fly in the dusk, Marianne Heske: Project Gjerdeløa, and their new knowledge lab in the basement. The lab will be a place for knowledge sharing, communication and research, with a focus on buildings and architecture.

Open to the public for 1 year from 6 May, the Hôtel van Eetvelde invites you to discover its extraordinary cupola, restored for the first time in 125 years!
Housed in the extension to the hôtel de maitre, at number 2 avenue Palmerston, LAB-AN also invites you to discover the “Aubecq: Fragments” exhibition, an immersive experience based around the Hôtel Aubecq, one of Victor Horta’s major creations. The installation combines video and mapping on a stone of the façade, plunging the viewer into the whirlwind of this work destroyed in 1950.
On 10 June, LAB-An and the Hotel Van Eetvelde will also be offering visitors a few surprises!
Horta Museum & CIVA – Brussels
On the occasion of World Art Nouveau Day, the CIVA is offering an intergenerational workshop on stone and the curves that characterise this emblematic movement.
During this workshop, everyone will be able to engrave his or her imaginary arabesque and discover Art Nouveau as well as the profession of stonecutter. Participants will be able to discover the secrets and history of stone while developing their creativity. Inspired by the Hôtel Aubecq, they will experiment with curves, calligraphy and stone cutting with the help of Marie-Christine De Belder, stone cutter.
This unusual activity will also be an opportunity to learn more about Art Nouveau from the experts at the Horta Museum, who will present previously unpublished documents to complete this practical experience.

To mark World Art Nouveau Day, Maison Cauchie invites you to take part in themed guided tours focusing on the sgraffito technique and the preservation of this wonderful heritage!

With over 4000 works, the Art Nouveau collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is one of the most important in France. Having recently refurbished the Art Nouveau rooms, the museum has been a member of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network since 2022, which brings together institutions and cities throughout Europe with a rich Art Nouveau heritage. From Nancy to Brussels, from Barcelona to Vienna and this year from Paris to Riga, free events and visits are being organised on 11 and 12 June to celebrate and introduce as many people as possible to the revolution in the arts around 1900.
