The Cladding of Art Nouveau Buildings
Theory, history & practice of architectural covering materials: ceramics, hydraulic cement tiles, terrazzo, metlachi and more.
Organised within the Creative Europe project “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia” (2024–2027), this second international symposium (following the 2024 Brussels edition) will explore how surface materials shape Art Nouveau buildings as a Gesamtkunstwerk: colour schemes, visual harmony, design processes, technologies and regional specificities.
3 thematic sections
• The “clothing” principle in Art Nouveau architecture (Semper and beyond)
• Ceramic and cement tile manufactories: overviews & case studies
• Architectural ceramics as a moment of transition: materials, innovation, ornament and industrialisation
Who can apply?
Researchers, architectural and art historians, architects, engineers, craftsmen, restorers, conservators, and professionals working on Art Nouveau heritage (students and even property owners are welcome too).
