The Maison Cauchie, the personal home and studio of artist-decorators Paul Cauchie and Caroline Voet, is one of the most original jewels of Brussels Art Nouveau. Located at number 5 rue des Francs in Etterbeek, the house was built in 1905 as a veritable showcase for their skills. The impressive façade, designed as a huge advertising poster, is adorned with several sgraffito panels designed to demonstrate Ateliers Cauchie’s mastery of this technique and attract potential customers. The second floor, meanwhile, was packed with interior design ideas, including sgraffito, stencil mural painting, painting on canvas and glass, stained glass, textile work, furniture and joinery.

Abandoned and threatened with destruction in the 1970s, the Maison Cauchie was listed in 1975 following the mobilisation of the neighbourhood and various official bodies. It was bought by Guy and Léona Dessicy in 1980. For fifteen years, they devoted themselves passionately to restoring the house and promoting the work of the Cauchie couple. Exhibitions, concerts, conferences and receptions brought the house back to life. From April 1994, the Maison Cauchie regularly opened its doors to the public, who were invited to explore the beautiful upstairs and the basement, which had been transformed into a gallery.

In 2022, a new page was turned in the history of the Maison Cauchie, which became the property of the CDA insurance company. A new museum project and a new restoration campaign are under consideration. The Maison Cauchie opens its doors to you to share its history and the work of its owners during individual and group guided tours, various workshops and activities, as well as for your private and professional events. All management is carried out on a voluntary basis by the members of the non-profit association dedicated to the Maison Cauchie.
